I've given up on hybrid power

Isn't the minimum legal age for a front passenger 12?
To be honest, even if there was, it would be daft, and I'd ignore it.

It's no different to sitting in the 'front' in my Honda.

He does have a booster seat, although I'm not sure if he needs it in the rear. I've heard rumours that the rear seats are already classed as child seats. If the belt isn't across his neck, then he may be safer without a booster seat when sitting in the back.

The law is pretty clear...

https://www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rules/using-a-child-car-seat-or-booster-seat

You need a booster seat between them being 22kg's and 12 years old or 135cm high, whether in the front or back..

But to be honest, I have never known anyone other then other parents getting too antsy about such things. I think it's more about the law being written to try to reduce the amount of injury due to ill fitting seat belts, so even if you follow the letter of the law it doesn't guarantee anything..

Of course, if you have an accident and the child was injured and you where found to not have them correctly seated, not only would you feel a tool, but I'm sure they'd chuck the book at you.. But that's your decision as the driver at the end of the day..

Nice car btw, love the TT styling, I think it's aged pretty decently..

You need a booster to prevent buckle crunch, submarining and ensure loading of the pelvis. Nothing to do with a chaffed neck.

Buckle crunch? How is that even relevant if he's not using a car seat.

What is safer. A big seat with a booster, or a smaller seat. That is my point, the seats and seat belt positions are a lot smaller than a normal car. I need to do some more testing with him to work out what is safest.

The simple solution is to use a booster seat that has a back on it, the seat belt is guaranteed to be then correctly fitted, and you will comply with the law.. Not only that they are no doubt the safest solution as the seat belt will fit correctly in any car, and most include side impact and allow them to stay upright whilst asleep.

Most of the manufacturers offer fitting guides that show which seats they have tested in any particular car..

e.g. http://fitfinder.britax.co.uk/

Anyway, enough of the boring kid stuff, how are you finding the car?

His pelvis is lower than the point the belt clicks into the buckle..... this means the strap across the belt isnt consistant loading and the buckle puts serious point loads at the point of contact...... because hes not using a car seat theres risk of 'buckle crunch'.

Quick google seems the MUMSnet types are using it in the wrong context though!

The buckle is submerged within the seat cushion. So its irrelevant. Anyway. I've really heard enough about car seats. rolleyes:

So far the TT has been great. It's a great car to drive. It feels low and planted, and the 4wd means you pull off at an incredible rate! The Bose audio is very nice as well. It's nice to drive a car that has a bit of originality to it. I've never liked german interiors, but this is full of interesting touches.

I've just completed a run until the LPG ran out. I got 290 miles. It then cost me £36 to brim. So, considering the difference in cost, I guess that means I'm getting the equivalent of 46mpg. Hmm, could be better.

Only giving some advice regarding the actual implications of no child seats aside from the legal ones!!

You weren't talking about cars seats anyway were you? I thought you were just guessing a lose argument on why you don't need them.

Any success selling the Insight?

What?

Up to 12 or a certain height you need a booster seat or a proper car seat. There's no law against under 12s sitting in the front...

Fair enough, I stand corrected. I googled it too after I posted. Must've been something I just didn't remember properly :)

Not jealous at all of those Westfields. :o

How much is LPG? My brain has packed in for the night but 290 miles for £36 I'd imagine to be much lower than 46 mpg unless LPG is far more expensive than I thought.

Just checked my Road Trip app and my last tank was £37.50 for 286 miles and that was just over 44 mpg on unleaded @£1.27.9/l

Yep. Someone put a deposit on it after a couple of days of advertising it on the insight forums. It was a bit quicker than I expected. I got it MOTd Tuesday so it's sold with a full 12 months, and he will be picking it up when he can get down here.

That fill up was at 72.9.

There's no smell of gas, so it might be running a bit rich. The whole system is probably due for a service and tune up.
