Radeon R9 290 and 290X widely available, but at premium prices

AMD seems to be supplying enough of its R9 290-series cards to keep up with demand, at least at these prices. However, it's worth noting that all four vendors have a lot of Hawaii-based models still listed as out of stock. The fact that prices remain so high suggests that supply and demand are still out of whack.

The R9 290 and 290X aren't the only Radeons that are marked up online, either. The R9 280X was supposed to be priced at $300, but vendors are hawking it for over $400 right now. Premiums like these may be acceptable to folks hoping to profit from mining Litecoins, but they're likely to drive gamers to competing GeForce cards.

Once the mining bubble bursts there'll be a plethora of amd cards going cheap. Could be a good time to pick up a bargain or two.

Outdated article, that. The cards are now at an all time high at $900 each for pretty much every 290x model on Newegg. I contacted 3 different, independent AMD reps as well a rep each from Sapphire and Powercolor and they confirmed that AMD had not changed the MSRP and neither had the brands themselves. So it is a case of etailers being extremely unethical and charging more just because they can.

There's gonna be 1000s of cheap AMD cards when the mining bubble bursts ;)

Thing is, people are randomly creating alt coins from their arses and so there will always be new coins to mine at low difficulty. So unless ASICs come out, GPU based mining isn't going anywhere.

Indeed. I will add this image to the OP. Thankfully prices seem to be a bit more sensible over here at OcuK.

Surprised the UK Goverment hasn't started looking into this Mining lark as a taxable income.

Pretty hard to trace considering the currency and where you hold the cash when cashing out.

I'm sure it will be looked into though, some people making thousands a week on top of their jobs.

If the prices of the 290X/290 keep increasing, it will not be AMD's fault guys, it will be the r/etailers adding on their extra profit. AMD are the good guys.

lol I liked that tweet in the OP. Whatever Roy did speaking to the CEOs of the etailers made it worse than what it was on Feb 4.

AMD's RRP has not changed from when the cards launched. Retailers are marking the cards up because of the insane demand.

It would be funny to see the 290 more expensive than the 780 and the 290X more expensive then the 780Ti (well that is my kind of humour and I am pretty lame) :D

The cheapest 290's have jumped up in price about from £320 to £350. The 780's have gone up since i last looked and now the cheapest is £390.

I am not saying it isn't good business sense, but how is it ethical to charge almost double the price for items? It's not even a case of low stock anymore, they got plenty of the cards due to people not buying them as much anymore and AMD having ramped up production. So to cover the lower sales, they are raising prices higher to maintain their sales profits.
