I imagine a few of us will be dodging the crowded restaurants and overpriced prix fixe menus that have come to dominate the Valentines Day restaurant scene and instead cooking for our loved ones ourselves. I do each year, and am again this time.

So, what are you cooking? I usually plan this a few days in advance, but unfortunately being very busy at work I've only been able to get round to it now so after some inspiration and tips.

What I have to work with:

Starter:

Scallop Tartare with White Chocolate

Main:

Rack of Lamb - Probably just do something quite simple with this, roast it with some rosemary and breadcrumbs and serve with a port reduction and either sweet potato rosti or potato gratin. I'm not sure how to jazz it up though. Any ideas?

Desert:

Champagne Jelly.

So, yea. It's quite in its infancy at the moment so any tips would be welcome!

Raw fish with a milky bar, mmmm.

Honestly, wouldn't you rather something more hearty and wholesome. I'd want a double whopper after that dinner.

Each to their own I suppose. Just a bit uppity and pretentious IMO.

I'm doing Sushi. Going to get the rice ready and present all the fresh goods at the table so we can make it together. Going to get drunk on Sake as well. :D

She's really into scallops, I'm not that into them to be honest but if she likes them then it wins me points later on! ;)

I admit it sounds quite a strange combination, but I can understand how it works. We'll see. The main course is just going to be roast lamb, pretty straight forward.

The thing about fine dining is that you have a great concentration of flavours and textures. It means that you don't actually need a great deal of food to fill you up. It's something that both her and I love and I really enjoy trying to replicate it at home.

I wouldn't go for raw scallops tbh - I've eaten a lot of scallops in my time, and raw is definitely the worse way I have had them, I would play it safe if you're wanting yer jammie piece!

Tapas here, it's a bit of a tradition. Nothing remotely authentic but just lots of small nibbles.

Thinking...

Flat bread with assorted dips
Sea bass with lemon/rosemary and sea salt
Chorizo with red wine/shallots (my fave)
Duck with a blood orange sauce or sticky, sweet and spicy chicken
Patatas Bravas
Roasted carrots with gremolata
Maybe a rocket salad

All served with good wine.

Not sure about dessert, probably won't be able to move after.

Tonight I'm trying coq au reisling from one of my Nigel Slater books - looks pretty nice! Having that with mixed green salad, home made soda bread with my roast garlic and herb butter and some new potatoes tossed in Guernsey butter and fresh parsley. Always a bit nervous when trying a new (to me) dish for the first time so may end up being chips from the chippy!

Good luck OP, sounds a nice menu

I've never done her a full three course meal so while it is simple, it'll be a surprise :)

Starter
Bruschetta with tomato and basil.

Main
Steak with chips, green beans and then peppercorn sauce on the side.

Dessert
Hot choc fondant, with cookie dough ice cream and a Ferrero Rocher.

Been completely unromantic this year, we are having chilli cheese nacho's washed down with lots of stella :D

Starter: Baked camembert with fresh bread to dunk in.

Main: HUGE ribeyes, roasted large portabello mushrooms, and sweetstem broccoli.

Dessert: Undecided, will sort something this evening.
