Employer threatening to ban e-cigs...

Maybe they are fed up of the awful smell that lingers around with e-cigs. Three people in my work place have changed to e-cigs and their offices now smell stale and disgusting, could just be the brand they use tough.

The vapour smells like whatever flavour the user is using. Furthermore the smell is no where near the strength of traditional cigarettes.

No workplace I know (including mine) bans people farting which is indisputably more repugnant and stronger smelling. We have a guy who occasionally works in my office who thinks it's funny to fart constantly, meaning I have to open the window yet he has never faced a single disciplinary for it.

You've just contradicted yourself entirely in one statement.

Yes, they're designed as an alternative to smoking. Continued use isn't still "smoking", and that's by pure definition.

Whether you continue to use them as an alternative, or quit nicotine altogether and stop, what you've been doing is indeed "vaping", not "smoking". The two aren't interchangeable -- it's what you inhale that defines "smoking", not the act of inhalation itself.

But yes, leading a huge fight over it is just wasted energy, to be honest. If you're customer-facing, you really shouldn't be sitting there puffing anyway.

It's the habit, the action itself - okay, so it's the inhalation and consumption of a substance which provides the brain with a drug - and while the deleterious effects of burning the tobacco is removed, the consumption remains.

So, yes, they're interchangeable. The goal is the same thing. Just a different method.

Ha ha, "fake cigarette". Funny guy, do you call MP3 players 'fake walkmans' too?

So I should go outside with the smokers and passive smoke then?

No, I call them MP3 players, because they're that's what they are. I was being sarcastic - obviously not enough as you didn't get it.

When I use my e-cigarette, I stand an extra foot or two away from people smoking cigarettes, problem solved. You're making a meal out of nothing. Get a grip.

Thats right bend over like a good boy?

Hate that lap dog attitude!

And I hate the English attitude that you don't have to adhere to your employer's requirements for what they deem to be a suitable workplace.

We could take some lessons from the Americans in this regard; make it easier to fire those that have no wish to respect the people that put food on their tables.

Well then your irrational point of view should trump everyone else's then.

May I ask why you don't like e-cigs?

Certainly. They smell funny, people using them in a quiet environment make stupid noises *pup, whoooosh*, if you're vaping at work then I'd also like some sort of 5 min get out clause where I only have to work with one hand. Irrational?

Add why would he?! Bet you're great to work with...

Forcing someone to smell your stinky vapid anal fumes, on purpose, is pretty much tantamount to assault in my eyes. There's something intrinsically homosexual about one man want another to smell his poo, and I have nothing against homosexuals, but that kind of thing is not appropriate in work.

As a member of a prominant and thriving anti fart community I for one....

I'm just being terribly pedantic in order to rib you. It isn't grammatically interchangeable because, by pure definition, vaping isn't smoking. :p :D

I'd still disagree, though, as they're differing activities providing the same goal: nicotine. Claiming someone is still just doing the same activity feels like saying skydiving is exactly the same thing as going on a roller coaster in order to provide the adrenaline junkie with their rush.

"Hand shandy break!" :D

... and still got 3 minutes left over.

Respect is earned not paid for !! You cannot pay for respect no matter what.

seriously?

It takes less than 5-10 seconds to have a pull on an E-cig instead of 10 minutes to run outside for a fag.

The db level is barely over ambient noise levels. Your keyboard typing is louder.

You can get odorless vapor which has no smell at all.

To be honest I don't really give two *****, I was trying to make excuses for the fact that I just think vaping is a cry for attention and looks down right retarded. ;)

You can also just hold it in and stealth away. Nobody would even notice.

its unprofessional in the extreme, a council office with people puffing on e-cigs, its just looks awful.

use the smoking area or gtfo

we complained about e-cigs in a team meeting along with a few others and they are now banned in the whole building, also a local authority employer!

It is disruptive to an office enviroment and incredibly unprofessional looking, I'm amazed you do not have the self awareness to realise this even within your thriving community of e-cig enthusiasts.

while crying for the ban of something for no reason other than you think it's retarded is somehow not retarded? ;)

Honestly, in an office environment I don't think it's too bad a thing to get away from the desk occasionally and go for a dander. Helps clear the mind as well. Sure, it may lessen productivity slightly but that's on the company (as long as you yourself aren't taking excessive puff breaks).

An good ol' stretch of the legs never hurt anyone. Unless they had terrible gangrene in them or were on a rack, of course.

I hate to be "that guy" but break your addiction to nicotine then this is a non-issue. You'll save yourself money on E-cigs too and wont have to "Fight for your right".

As someone else said its just like exchanging heroin for methadone.. Methadone is prescribed and less harmful socially then street Heroin but you're still feeding a rather pointless addiction and not actually gaining much

If it were really an aid to stop smoking then why are you a " long term electronic cigarette user", really all you done is swap one habit for another.

Plenty of businesses have banned the use of e-cigs other than within their regular smoking guidelines and your employer is simply attempting to follow suit to which you've spat the dummy out.

Why not just stick the dummy back in and suck on that rather than an e-cig?
