Titanfall (XB1/360)

The same argument happened last generation with the PS3 being slated for having an inferior GPU to the 360. That generation ended with the PS3 having some of the most stunning games I have seen even comparing to the new consoles now.

Hardware spec's are one thing but a superb developer is the key which Naughtydog and Quantic Dream proved with the PS3.

You do actually understand the PS3 console had more overall raw horsepower to work with than the 360 don't you.
Dev's can't work miracles. The potential needs to be there.

This. Suddenly resolution is all so important and yet I don't know what the resolution was of a single one of the 231 games I played last gen.

Last generation any resolution which was 'High Definition' was acceptable. I remember buying my first HDTV to go with a 360 and being blown away. In fact I recall Microsoft partnering with Samsung and recommending their HDTV's to gamers.

Times change, technology evolves, this generation 1080P was expected to be the norm as it has been the TV standard for several years now, hell even Freeview HD channels are broadcast in 1080i.

Just got my beta code, installing now :) Fingers crossed this lives up to the hype, hoping that the lack of servers anywhere near NZ doesn't mean it'll be as painful as trying to play COD.

Initial thoughts:

It's a lot of fun. It seems to be very fast but not in an overly frenetic way. The grunts which accompany the enemy players are quite cool despite just being cannon fodder.
I like the use of 3d and the way it's easy to jump around the levels, gaining height and vantage points.
The Titans are pretty nice and certainly make you think differently on how to play them. They feel very different to the pilots too.
The graphics look pretty good and it seems very fluid. I like the styling. That said I did get some pronounced slow down on one bit but strangely it didn't happen again. You can tell this beta is not running at a particularly high resolution.

The controls seem spot on to me, I prefer it to the way BF4 handles. Aiming seems very precise.

The sound is suitably meaty and I like the background music.

Quite like it so far, thoughts from top of my head:

It's quick, not too quick but certainly a twitch shooter.
It controls very well, pretty much like COD in pilot mode and a simplified mechwarrior in Titan mode.
The jetpack is awesome, although my brain needs more time to properly adjust to using it more.
The maps are pretty good, they have a Halo vibe, a good mix of open and closed areas. The vertical nature could lead to a lot of camping but time will tell.
It's not revolutionary either in terms of gameplay or graphics, it feels different for sure but it's very definitely not mind-blowing in terms of new elements.
Everyone seemed to cluster around the Titans but that's probably expected early on.
The grunt AI is woeful, I came across 1 from each team shooting each other from 1m apart, neither hit for 5 seconds or paid any attention to me. They make the maps feel busier but they are cannon fodder which is a bit of a shame as killing them still counts towards the team score.

No email yet, hopefully it'l be sat waiting for me when I get home from work. I've got this pre-ordered anyhow so hopefully the good initial first impressions will continue. :)
