Radeon R9 290 and 290X widely available, but at premium prices

So glad i picked up my second 7950 before the boom hit. i could probably sell it on now and make near double what i paid, but alas, i'm in it for the games, not to cash in. :p

Blame mining, whilst the prices aren't good if you're looking to buy an AMD card now they will help competition as the next set of sales figures come in I can see AMD closing the gap a fair bit due to mining.

This. Miners and bedroom have a go's are all at it now getting multiple cards in crates as they think there is big money to make in it.

There may come a drought period where people get fed up of the mining/noise/heat/profit margins and you could find a MM with tons of them which can only drop sharply!

People are too stupid these days to say no to bad pricing...
AFAIK it's only retailers jacking the prices up, meaning if the customers say no the retailers put the prices back down and sell again.
..
Ultimately you can take any card at any time and find retailers jacking the prices up and as long as customers don't say no, the prices stay high and you see them trying higher prices up till people stop buying. They have no reason to lower them while people are stupid enough to just pay way higher. Same happens on most launches when supply is marginally low(or people run around saying supply will be low) then the prices go up.

The funny thing is when you take out the AMD references it makes reading about the opposite faction which is also true. ;)

Looks like you're going Nvidia...
I don't see the problem, e-tailers cashing in on the buzz. If you're not happy wait for deals of the day (loads of 280s going for £220<) or hop over to what's better value for gaming currently.

I managed to pick up a tri-x 290 in Croatia of all places (5% higher tax! and usually higher prices by default on high end pc goods) for less than I see them selling back home in the UK about £350 ish. Not a bad shout.

Haha, if AMD release a gimped card for less money then I and all the other miners will find a way to ungimp it and increase our profit margins. Bring it on!

I'm sure humbug is like the rest of us he buys what makes sense at the time of purchase and isn't one eyed :)

+1

All joking aside, I really can not see AMD doing anything to change the situation. They are not responsible for the high prices (but I still have my doubts and think they may be taking a slice too) and are selling all the cards they can make. Why should they try and change the status quo, the only thing that could change this is if supply exceeded demand.

If supply were to exceed demand I suspect AMD would then do something about the situation and try and portray themselves as the friend of gamers, who can blame them they are a business after all.
