Early Life Crisis Car?...

If you need cheaper insurance and better MPG go for the Mk4 GT TDI 150... they usually hover around 170-175hp standard and you will get 50mpg...but it is a diesel.

I thought the GT TDI 150 would had 150BHP as standard? Or did VW just make the more powerful than stated on paper?

Insuring a car that will impress at the age of 22

Looks like you need to save up a bit more and buy a supra.

You'll get a pretty good Mk1 MX5 for that money. Spend the leftovers on some short rock hard springs, dump all the interior on eBay, cage, hardtop and ROLL.

The best things that i can think of all of 2 doors and are Japanese.

Celica, Civic EP3, Mr2, mx5, Soarer v8, Perlude, Hyundai coupe

You might want to consider a 4 door e36 on coilovers but that's a bit ratty and probably wont impress anyone.

If you drop the 5 door requirement, then you open up to the list of cars p1RATE has just posted above.

At 21 I purchased myself a 1996 Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC - it was cheaper to insure than many other similar vehicles at the time, and was an absolutely fantastic car.

Drop the moderately cool requirement and buy something like a Toledo - they're hated/ totally forgotten about so you get half a chance of finding a decent one even for £1500 and they aren't a bad car at all just being another vag remould.

If you're looking for a cool hatch that's nippy.

Enter Clio 172 Ph1.

Pick up a decent one for £1500. It will feel rapid compared to a 1.4 Golf. (0-100 in about 16 seconds) Plenty of space, economy of course depends on the types of journeys and how heavy footed you are. Expect 40mpg if you do long journeys and 30mpg if you do short ones. Less if you drive like a car thief.

Reliable as you like providing they're serviced properly too!

Liking the suggestions so far :) Perhaps should clarify on some points though. Oh, and I'm sorry for the misleading title. Haha.

Budget is up to around £2k now. Not a huge improvement, but might edge me out of banger territory. :)

When I say nippy, I just mean "not a slouch" haha. I want to be able to overtake other cars safely, quickly, and without having any "close shaves". Being able to accelerate out of danger is a good thing. (Also, giving the odd boy racer a run for his money could be a laugh).

I'm probably only going to have the car for a short while, I'm just looking to "ease" myself into nippy car territory. I'll go for a proper power house once I've saved up a decent amount of money. :)

Once mapped (and with new air filter etc.) a MkIV Golf 1.8T gives an easy 200+ bhp. Is there anything "quite like" this?

Leon cupra is a better base to start from if that's what you want, can't see why £2k won't get you one.

The likes of a 172 is far more " true hot hatch" though and again I'm sure could be done for your money

So you want to spend 1/6th of the cost of your budget on a remap alone? Why not use that cash to buy a better car with, or a better example of a MK4 1.8t?
