Carpet. Been to friends houses with laminate flooring and it's just awful imo, feels cold, it's noisy (in slippers ). I just dislike it in general. Something very unhomely about it.
I'd agree our downstairs is all laminate apart from the lounge and it works well, it would feel far too cold if the lounge didn't have a nice carpet in.
My preference would be carpet for the above mentioned reasons - it's warmer, quieter and more comfortable. However, we have a 2 year old son and a carpet wouldn't stay clean for more than a day. He spills drinks, drops food crumbs etc, so for now we are sticking with it. The one advantage of laminate is that it's very easy to keep clean.
We've got laminate (well, engineered timber) all through the downstairs with a large rug which pretty much covers the lounge floor. The whole downstairs used to be open plan so it sort of made sense.
I'd always rather have carpet for comfort in the lounge but as our diningroom is a high traffic area between the kitchen and the rest of the house we'll most probably replace all the downstairs flooring with solid wood and keep the lounge with non-fitted carpeting.
