Am I wasting my money buying a smart TV? Same features offered by bluray player?

If we look at say the Samsung F5000 vs F5500. The F5500 offers "smart" features, whereas the F500 does not.

If I'm going to buy a Samsung F5100 bluray player which has "Smart" features, am I wasting my money getting the F5500 instead of the F5000?

ie: The bluray play would offer all the extra features the F5500 would over the F5000?

The performance of Smart enabled TVs and Blu-ray players isn't that great TBH. They are getting better. But standalone boxes such as the Android MX, Roku, WDTV etc tend to work better and aren't tethered to the TV manufacturer's content packaging.

Personally I would buy a TV because of it's picture performance. Smart features would (at this point) never factor in my purchasing decision. If the TV has them, then fine. What you'll find though is they are becomes more a standard feature.

As above! Picture performance first!

I have smart TV and smart blu ray. Only plus side of the smart tv is I don't ahve to turn the blu ray on to watch netflix :D

Our Samsung is smart enabled, and for the most part we use it for bbc iplayer, occasionally a few of the other on demand players, and very occasionally youtube
Anything else, 'smart' is either on a tablet or a computer, over time this might change.

Our non-smart Samsung, just like the smart one takes USB sticks and plays back absolutely everything I've throw at it. This USB input feature I would see as must, followed by wireless streaming ability.

Understood, but that's not the question I'm trying to ask...

The F5000 is the non-smart TV.
The F5500 is the smart TV.
If I get the F5000 with the F5100 bluray player - which has smart - am I missing out on anything?

ie: If I get the F5500 TV and F5100 bluray player, am I getting the same smart software package twice, once on the TV and once on the bluray?

And if I got the F5100 smart enabled bluray player, would it offer the same smart features I'd have on the F5500 TV if I got it?

Surely 2 tabs with a product on each should give you your comparison :p

The internetz is a wonderful thing ;)

As far as Smart features are concerned the F5000 TV + the F5100 Blu-ray doesn't equal the F5500 TV. There's stuff like face recognition, gesture control, Skype (I think) on the 5500 TV that isn't covered by the BD player. There's bound to some overlap, of course. iPlayer, YouTube, USB playback etc. All this though I've gathered from just looking quickly through Samsung web site.

Not interested in face recognition and gesture control. Only interested in TV program related apps etc. Netflick, E4, IPlayer - anything that offers content over the internet etc.

Can see a clear list for these devices in that area :(

Is PQ same between both tv's?

I can't remember the last time I used SMART on my tv, it's completely pointless in my case. I have a pc connected up to the tv though which is always going to be far superior than any "smart" setup on any device.

What are you using currently to play Blu Rays?

You may be better off keeping that and spending the £60 you were going to spend on that and stick it towards a barebone pc which can do everything you could ever want to.

Don't want the extra faffage of PCs and media players etc. Just want a TV or TV/bluray player that allows netflick, lovefilm and other online content to be watched.

I'll go to a store and try and talk to someone.

The Samsung F5500 doesn't have a camera so therefore doesn't have face recognition, gesture control or Skype.

To the OP.
Two seconds searching on Amazon and reading the reviews gives you your info : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-BD-...=UTF8&qid=1392713996&sr=8-1&keywords=bd+f5100

there are only 2 apps installed on this device and they are YouTube and iPlayer, you cannot download any additional apps.

Ah thanks! Never clocked that! The F5500 has lots more though!

Looking at the Sony DBP-S1100 that seems to offer far more - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-BDPS1100-Smart-Blu-ray-Player/dp/B00AZVJ1HW
