Flippin' 'eck! I actually managed to build a dual micro coil on the IGO-W with .15 Kanthal. This stuff is so thin that more often than not it'll break either when you cook it and squish it, tighten the posts down or thread the wick or just look at it funny. Often I would have one lovely coil all firing and prepared and be fitting the other coil when the first one would break. This has literally taken me about 6 hours lol!

Well here it is, 2x8 wraps of .15 Kanthal around a 1.8mm screwdriver with cotton wicks and coming in at bang on 2 ohms:

Can anyone tell me what flavour concentrates for DIY are similar to Vapology "eden dew" "eastern mist" and "tobacco" flavours?

Also can you recommend any good tobacco / similar concentrates which would make a good ADV. Tobacco or coffee type flavours I like, nothing too sweet or sicky.

We'll done Red, how does it vape?

It wasn't worth the effort lol!

No - its good, but its only very slightly "better" than a single 2ohm coil with .2 Kanthal - more vapour maybe, same flavour. Thinking about it, is it better? I dunno - its... different - warmer maybe. Better than the dual 14 wraps of .2 for sure. It takes a higher voltage than the single coil with .2.

I prefer a cool vape though, so I won't be bothering again, but I'm happy I did it before I ran out of .15, just to say I did :)

No doubt it'll break when I have to rewick it.

Good job on that Red!! :) You're a braver man than me. I did a single microcoil on my IGO-W but I might find a dual coil too tricky, and frankly, from what you've said and from what someone else said on a video I watched, single coil can be just as good anyway.

Well, tonight I decided to do my next coil, this time on the Kayfun. The one problem I find is getting the coil to not slant slightly forward. This coil is also coming out exactly 2 ohms, 8 wraps of .3 kanthal around a 3mm screwdriver (my IGO-W is 10 wraps of .3 kanthal around 2mm screwdriver @ 1.6ohms).

I took time to make sure there's clearance from the centre airhole of the Kayfun, didn't want any shorting. Pulses nicely. Just hope it doesn't lower itself over time and stays in place. How is the wick looking, is it the right amount? Didn't want to block the side channels.

I'm a bit disappointed with a couple of aesthetic things. The kayfun colour and the sigelei colours are very different. And there's a small gap where it screws together, can that be rectified? The small adjustment screw under the Kayfun won't go in any further.

Bog standard 5 wrap .2 kanthal or microcoil with organic cotton works pretty much as well as any crazy setup to be completely honest.

I screw the sigeili top cap up to the bottom of the kayfun. This helps to keep the kayfun secure and it looks better overall. I have found with other attys that feed air through the 501 connector this can actually act like an airflow control valve.

For the kayfun it just makes it more secure and seems less likely to break the threads if you drop it.

In terms of coils i am no expert by any means but if you set your coil more angled on the head you can position the wick better so it comes from one side and then down and then over the top of the juice feed slots but stuck to the wall so as not to block the slots. Difficult to explain. I'll rebuild my kayfun tomorrow and post some images.

Good call Tauren thanks :)

My Kanger mini protank V2 arrived today with some Dekang Crystal Menthol and it is a very good taste. Not quite feeling the replacement for ciggies but it is a good substitute and working nicely for now.

no worries chap. a cheap, simple easy to use and maintain setup. still working well for me now after 6 months use!

if you're after an intense menthol hit, i quitel ike the arctic mint from vape escape. could be worth a try if you like minty menthol flavours.

I do this too, with all my atty's not just the Kayfun. Which Kayfun to you have Merlin? my lite + matches the Sigelei finish exactly.

I've got the HCigar clone. I don't know if HCigar is any better than other clones and worth keeping, but I've not filled it yet and am considering selling it as I think it just looks stupid on the Sigelei, it doesn't match at all! I've seen a few Kayfuns on ebay, can you link me one that would be the exact same finish as yours on ebay or somewhere?

I wouldn't be the best person to ask, i don't really know much about the clones. Mine is an original from cloud 9.

I have an Ithaka clone too that matches the sigelei, you want the brushed stainless steel finish.

SO angry at myself, the following all arrived not long ago;

Nemesis mod
KFL
18650 batteries

I put the KFL into the nemesis mod just to see how it all looks, and I couldn't get the ato back out, I basically forced it in without removing the nemesis locking pin for the ato.

Ended up thinking the screwdriver hole that was exposed on the bottom of the ato through the head of the nemesis would help. Forced the screw round and round and broke the threading on the bit which holds the coil.

Is it possible to buy just this part from anywhere?

So ****ed off at myself, pics below;

It's only a clone and was only cheap. Good job I didn't spent a full 60-70 quid on one before being an absolute tool.

EDIT:

Turns out I just need a new centre pin, hopefully I can source one from somehere!

@TommyV it may be worth contacting Fastech or where ever you bought it from, as i remember that loads were shipped out with a broken centre pin and you could say it just broke tightening down the coil? ;)

If not, iirc you can buy the centre pin direct from svoemesto (i know its a clone) but its their russian site and i dont know how much it will be inc. shipping.

@Merlin5, I have a real Kayfun here and a clone, and on the clone the centre pin is slightly longer.
This is ok on a mech mod as all i have to do is adjust the centre pin on the mech mod, but on my Vamo or Evic i do have a slight gap of about 1-2mm.

Dammit, getting seriously fed up with making coils now. Does anyone have a 100% fool-proof method of getting a working coil? In particular, I'm building it in a ceramic cup for the Sophia using ready wires, so that's all fine.

I wrap it on a small jeweller/watchmaker's screwdriver, all looks good. Get it in the coil and test fire a few times... glows nicely from the middle out and back again. Pulsed a few times, all good. Stick in some cotton and hit it and there's a definite hotspot.

Problem is, I then try to fix the hotspot and end up just destroying the damn thing and having to start again. :(

Cheers j.col. Screwing the sigelei top cap as Lt.Red mentioned to me certainly helps, but tbh, I'm not too fussed about that anymore, it's really the finish on the kayfun that bothers me a lot. I just need to find another 3.1 or KFL+ clone with the same brushed SS finish as the sigelei. The ones I've seen seem to be more polished stainless steel finish.

I've also started considering getting a mech mod as I'd prefer something much shorter in my hand. Even in 18350 mode, it still looks a bit silly and too tall for me when the Kayfun is screwed onto the sigelei. But from what I can gather, mech mods can be demanding to get right, so, not sure if I want that extra headache. But they're certainly cheap enough on everyone's favourite chinese site, so I dunno.

It just removes one of your methods of regulating the vape - which is VV/VW settings.

So the other one remains, which is how you make your coil. So yeah if it's too high a resistance to vape well at the 4.1v from a fresh battery (and as it drops) then you can't really rescue it by turning up the wattage.

However I do find that when I have VV/VW controls, I tend to fiddle with them a bit much sometimes so sometimes it's actually nice to not have them!

Of course it also removes the safety aspect of having a regulated mod. But provided you're careful that's not necessarily a big issue, just make sure you check all your bits. I still check all my coils on a regulated mod first.

I got my KFL+ clone from vape gear and it's great, a lot better than the 3.1es clone I got from FT.

Comes with the clear tank pictured as well as the normal steel/poly/steel and steel/steel/steel sections.

As for the coil you asked about, I would go for smaller diameter so you don't have to have as much cotton. I also find that smaller diameter, but longer coils are easier to manipulate and less likely to go out of shape when you adjust or re-wick them. That resistance of 1.6ohm though is pretty spot on for a Kayfun, 1.3-1.6 is just right imo.

As for avoiding the slant I don't bother, I let it be diagonal as I find it keeps the cotton away from the juice channels easily. Never had any issues with wicking (unless it's my fault like too much or too little cotton).

Any advice on which KFL+ clone is best for the money? Looking for a second as the russian I have isn't very good and I just want a second KFL+ to have on hand for when it's needed.

I got my clones from modsandatties http://www.modsandatties.com/gb/
The Kayfun clone is spot on, but i would say its polished, well it was polished but i would say its brushed now with all the little marks on it lol ;)

The Kfl looks good on the Nemisis clone in 18350 mode as in PardonTheWait's pic.
Regarding mech mods, yes they have no vv/vw control, but looks wise they look better imo.
The main saftety thing is that there is not a short on your coil, so i usually build a coil, test it on my Vamo, and if there isno shorts, i put it on my mod.
Or you can always buy a kick for it.
I doubt you will be going sub oHm (less than 1oHm) so normal good quality batteries should be fine.

Does anyone have a 100% fool-proof method of getting a working coil?

Right I am no expert but I did learn some valuable lessons whilst doing the .15 Kanthal microcoils that may help you (went through nearly 1 meter of the stuff before I got two working coils). Basically if you get a hot spot on a .15 Kanthal coil when you first dry burn it, it will either:

a. Instantly and irretrievably distort the coil causing it to be written off or;
b. Instantly burn out.

So, after much trial and error I found that:

1. Make sure you are wrapping a fresh bit of wire. What I mean by this is if you are using a pack from stealth vape for instance that came wrapped around card, avoid the kinks that the card causes in your coil section at all costs.
2. Always burn the wire before you begin and don't be shy - get it white hot at least 3 times across the full length. This helps it keep its shape when its on the screwdriver.
3. When wrapping around the screwdriver don't hold it too hard because the wire will twist on the driver when you wrap - let it slip through your fingers as you wrap so it lays on the driver and does not twist. Its a fine line - you need to maintain the tension to form a tight coil but avoid the twist.
4. Slide the coils down the driver then tension the tails by pulling down (not too hard or the Kanthal will snap and you've chuffed it) and finally burn the coil again on the screwdriver to "set" the coil. It does not have to be purfect at this stage this is to get the tension right. Later you will push the coil together on the atty to finally form the microcoil. This is easier said than done seeing as we are unfortunately burdoned with just two hands. I tried all sorts of positions and ended up trapping the tails with my thumb against the side of my desk whilst supporting the driver then bringing the lighter to bear. Occasionally I knackered it at this stage by busting off the tails so burn lightly and do not pull too hard. Occasionally I burnt my fingers :o
5. Offer the screwdriver up to the atty and keep the coil on the driver until the tails are fixed.
6. Most importantly DO NOT LET THE TENSION GO FROM THE COIL UNTIL THE ENDS ARE FIXED IN THE ATTY. Hold the two tails close to the driver and insert it, then pinch it tight or better still twist around the retaining screws and fasten one at a time whilst maintaining the tension. When both are fixed you can let go and gently remove the driver.
7. If you are fixing with screwed posts, insert the tails so that the screw post tightens the tension around the driver - so as you turn clockwise the tail is pulled into the screw head clockwise. Do it the other way and you will loose tension and probably create a hot spot.
8. Use slightly longer tails than most tutorial vids show you so you have some flexibility when compressing the coils and don't bugger it up when you secure it.

That's about it really I hope that helps. I'm not saying this is 100% fool proof but that what I found anyway.
