If you're not bothered about preserving what's on the tape, you could try recording over part of it then trying to play it back. There's always a chance the tape is blank.

So the amp appears to work. Have you tried taking out the plug from the "ext speaker" socket when trying play back?

It has an internal speaker.

good catch! Taking out just gives a tone. Seems to be present at all random test points on the tape. Shouldn't it be white noise if empty?
