PC totally dead

Hi,

My son's PC is completely dead. Yesterday it was running fine but now, on pressing the power button, nothing happens. No lights come on on the motherboard, no fans start to spin - nothing.

I have tried a different power lead, one that I know works but still nothing.

Is this likely to be a PSU issue?

It's an Enermax Noisetaker EG495AX-VE(W) 485W powering an aBit IP35-E motherboard.

I only have 1 other PSU in the house which is very neatly cabled up in my own PC whic took me ages to tidy the cable so I'm extremely reluctant to dismantle it again.

Could try the PSU paperclip test to confirm the PSU is dead.

Never heard of that before, quickly googled it and seems straightforward enough. Just given it a try and still nothing, looks like a need to look for a new PSU.

Thanks for the help.

Seeing as your issue is solved GWillow, do you mind if I hijack your thread :D

I have exactly the same symptoms - New GA-Z87-D3HP Motherboard, all new components (older case), assembled today. Power cord plugged in... no power at all. No beeps, no LEDs, no fans.. nothing!

I've done the paperclip test on the PSU (green + black) and it spins up fine.

Does this mean that my new mobo is dead?

Are there any specific new features on the GA-Z87-D3HP board that are preventing it from powering on? e.g. not having enough screwed mount contacts with the case etc..?

When I do the paperclip test to the PSU, the PSU itself spins up fine. I have connected a case fan to this too and that also spins up (as per your video).

This tells me that the PSU is functioning correctly I assume.

When the PSU is plugged into the Mobo (2x4pin and Long 20pin) there are no LEDs/Fans/Beeps when the power button is pressed.. leading me to believe that the mobo might be dead.. :(

Just an update to this - my new PC specs (if that helps anyone solve this):

- Gigabyte Z87-D3HP Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
- Intel Core i5-4570 3.20GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor
- Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 CPU Cooler
- Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLS2CP4G3D1609DS1S00CEU)
- VTX ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (From previous PC)
- Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** HDD
- 650W PSU (From previous PC)

The problem is still present. I'm thinking of sending the mobo back to OcUK, however I'm not looking forward to having to re-do the thermal paste :/

Hello

Try taking everything out of the case and just running the MB, CPU and hard-drive. It could be the case shorting something out. It's just happened to my friends PC. I took it all out last night and it started up fine, loaded windows etc outside of the case.
Just use a screwdriver to bridge the switch connection on the MB to power it up.

Ok so I tried bridging the Power +ve/-ve with a screwdriver both inside the case and also installed 'standalone' outside the case on a table...

No power either time!

Does this 100% mean that the Motherboard is DOA?

Did you try with just the bare minimum attached? Just MB and CPU? If so then I think it does sound like the MB may be dead :(
The one I just fixed turned out to be a faulty USB port for the case causing a short.

Yeah it had just the MB and the CPU, outside the case :(

I've sent it back to OcUK today via UPS. Anyone know how long it usually takes for them to check it and then (if it is indeed dead) send out a replacement?
