27" for gaming... Optimum?

I currently game on a 22" and have done for a while.

Would a 27" "improve" the experience and would anything higher be overkill for desktop gaming?

My thinking is it will fill more of my peripheral vision while not filling it completely (good thing imo).

Also, is 1080p at 27" worth it?

Thanks.

Personally i consider the jump i made from a 22" 1680x1050 TN to 27" 2560x1440 IPS the greatest upgrade i ever made. Even a year on a still get amazed by how awesome it looks if i havent gamed for a few days. I only got a £300 DGM too...

I used to use a 22" too when I got the 24" vg248qe I could see pixels as I sit close. Can only imagine what 27" 1080p look like.

I've recently gone from 22" 1080p to 24" 1080p and I can now notice pixels so if going 27" I'd have to go to a higher res. Other people find it totally fine though, so see if you can view a 27" monitor before buying to see how you feel about it yourself.

Definitely wouldn't go 1080p at that size. I've just gone from 22" 1080p to 1440p 27" and it's brilliant. Depending on your spec and game choice, there's always the consideration of sustaining the required frame rates of course.

I had a 24" Asus PA246Q (IPS). Just bought a 27" Iiyama xb2779qs.

Great upgrade. I really think 1440p is a must for 27", 1080p will not be crystal clear. Just think that 1440p has about 70% more pixels than 1080p so in the same sized box things are just nearly 2 times more clear. Also this makes colours feel crispier. Go to a shop and watch a 15" laptop with 720p screen and a full HD 1080p screen and see the difference for yourself

If you game just make sure you buy an IPS panel that will not have terribly high lag and absolutely no overshoot.

Also, be ready to RMA if the screen has backlight bleeding or too many dead pixels. The 27" panel market is still a bit dodgy some times. You best bet is the Asus PB278Q or Viewsonic 2770 which seems to have a very high Quality Control at factory. Other choices are Iiyama xb2779 and Dell 2713HM. You may pick more expensive like Samsung or cheaper like DGM.

I just happen to have 3 different screens next to each other since I live with a flatmate, the 2 IPS screens we use are vastly superior to the 22" TN Samsung "gaming" screen. Of course we carefully pick IPS panels without high lag, no ghosting and no overshoot.

Lastly, at 1440p you just barely need 2x MSAA or even FXAA so that offsets the 4xMSAA needed at 1080p to remove jagged edges.

It depends how far away the monitor is for you.

I have tried both 24" and 27", and tbh I think I would probably prefer 24" for gaming, because my monitor is quite close to me.

27" is defo better if you want it for watching movies and stuff too though. 24" isn't so good for watching movies from a couple metres away.

1080p at 27" is fine imo btw.

If 27" is on your desk, get a higher res monitor or just go to 24" IPS or 120Hz depending on what your usage pattern suits.

The pixels on 1080p at that size will be quite visible and will probably remove some of the immersion factor.

IPS will be better for colours, but 120Hz good for fast paced gaming. Either of those two is probably a more worthwhile upgrade at 24" than going to 27". You know what though, it's up to you. Can you go to a shop or mates and try one out perhaps?

In my opinion not really if you're going down the 1920x1080 route. I have a Hazro 2560x1440 which was amazing for gaming, a truly amazing display, although you need the extra graphics grunt for ~40% more pixels over a 1920x1080.

Recently switched to a triple Asus VN247 display setup for gaming and I think 24" is the sweet spot for 1920x1080, any more and you're going to find the pixel density is too low, and it's going to start looking a bit jaggy.

As many have said I think 27" and bigger deserves a higher resolution than 1080p. You could go multi monitor setup and get some nice 24" monitors, or you could maybe wait till april and look at the rog swift 27" monitor. Or look to some of the current 1440p monitors, only down side is refresh rates on current 1440p however if its not a huge priority then go ahead :)

How much extra grunt is needed for 2560 x 1440?

Would a R9 290 be adequate?

By the same token, if drooping to 24" 1080p at 144hz.. how much grunt does that need in comparison and would it be worthwhile upgrade from a 22" TN panel?

Thanks.

I got the Iiyama ProLite E2773HS-GB1 for Christmas. Bloody brilliant, IMO!
I've looked at this and a 1440 Asus monitor side by side - I can see the difference initially, of course, but I stop noticing after a few minutes of gaming.

For me, though, there comes a point where the game is in sharper focus than my eyes have in real life, which is when the game immersion starts to fall away and the image ends up looking like blatant CGI in a film.

Obviously won't be "as good" but 1080p on a 27" monitor isn't bad.

I don't noticed any increased "blockiness" at all compared to a 24" 1080p monitor.

Indeed. I've used 24" and 27" 1920 x 1080 monitors next to each other countless times. Most of the criticism comes from people who haven't had this direct comparison.
