Anyone still use the Megahalems CPU cooler? Any good?

Hi guys,

Looking for a decent cooler for either an i5 4670k or an i7 4770k and noticed a red version of the Megahalems:

Are they any good especially with the cpus I've listed, as I know they are a little toasty?

Otherwise I'm looking for a decent AIO liquid cooler, but they are almost double the price?

Thanks for any insights you can offer :)

Still a very good cooler. And has less of a chance of blocking ram slots like some of the larger dual tower coolers. Though if your using low profile ram and dont mind the size, this is a better option.

Alpenfohn k2.

Cheaper and comes with two quality fans. Ive owned both as my current k2 replaced a prolimatech supermega i had. The k2 with stock fans allowed my cpu (i7 920 @4ghz) to run 6c lower than the mega, and much quieter than the akasa viper fans i had on the mega.

Yeah I noticed that too about the RAM slots, though do you think it'll be man enough for the CPUs I've listed?

What are you using on your 4770K, if you don't mind me asking? :)

Ive got the k2 on mine but have changed the fans to akasa piranhas. In stress tests the cpu will hit the 90's. But this isnt through any fault of the cooler as im sure your aware of intels bodge job of using thermal paste on theese chips. In normal use like games the cpu hits 67c max at 4.5ghz on 1.275v, this is in a case with virtually zero front air intake.

Thanks setter, that's good to know :)

The K2 would be similar to the Megahalems I assume? And if you max out at 67c with a tidy overclock on a hot running chip then that's actually quite good.

hmmm do i do it or let the moths out of the wallet and get an AIO for a lot more?

No probs, no idea how the mega would perform on this current chip. But the difference on the old 920 was quite pronounced after switching to the k2.

An AIO such as the corsair ones will take up less space, though tbh im still wary of them as theres more to go wrong with them compared to an air heatsink. The k2 at its current price is pretty good value as i paid £60.00 ono for mine, in the time ive owned it ive used it on an i7 920, a 3570k, 3770k and now the chip in sig. It has definitely proved to be good value for money.:)

Yep, i had the super mega, this was a limited edition silver model with copper insert fins. With 1900 rpm viper fans in p95 the temps on the mega were 77c iirc. When switching to the k2 the temps dropped to 71c max and a very substantial drop in noise as the fans on the k2 are much quieter. Front 120 is 1500rpm, centre 140 is 1100rpm.

Ah right, and i can only assume the difference will be greater on the new i7s. Think I'll have another look around and check out the K2 as well, thanks :)

Could be a difference with the newer chips, probably down to the k2 having more surface area to dissipate heat. Glad to have been able to offer advice/input.:)

I use Megahalems black with 2 akasa apache black fans and it works great on my 4770k.
Fans at 800rpm, idle temps mid 20s, full load high 40s.

Its at stock, in very cramped Colossus M-ITX.
Airflow is limited in this case. I tried it with 4.3 ghz overclock as well and sress test was showing high 60s in this small case.
I also had this cooler on my oc'ed 3570k before ( 4.2 ghz ) and temps were good as well.
One thing worth saying about thus cooler, it was the first one which didn't cut my fingers during instalation. Dunno if its because of it being powder coated or is it the great attention to detail by Prolimatech.

Hmmmm, spanner, works, thrown :p

It may work best with direct airflow over it, if I could get away with this cooler then I'd be happy, worth taking the risk? Hmmmm

Had the black version of it before. Great cooler however it is expensive if you take into account that it doesn't come with fans. I ran mine with 2 120mm pwm fans and it cooled my 2500k @ 4.7 1.35v in the mid 70s under stress but about mid 50 while gaming.

Great cooler and would have it again

It's now cooling my brothers 2500k @ 4.4 easily at mid 60s with a single akasa piranha fan. Highly recommend those fans for heatsinks. They are brilliant.
