Quarter-to-quarter up 1.6%—Desktop graphics sales up 3% second quarter in a row

Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry's research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, announced estimated graphics chip shipments and suppliers’ market share for 2013 4Q. The quarter was the second quarter in a row to show a gain in shipments, up 1.6% quarter-to-quarter, and up 2% compared to the same quarter last year.

Quick highlights:

• AMD’s overall unit shipments decreased 10.4%, quarter-to-quarter, Intel’s total shipments increased 5.1% from last quarter, and Nvidia’s increased 3.4%.

• The attach rate of GPUs to PCs for the quarter was 137% and 34% of PCs had discrete GPUs that means 66% of the PCs are using embedded graphics.

• The overall PC market increased 1.8% quarter-to-quarter, but declined 8.5% year-to-year.

It still ****es me off how they say Intel is selling GPUs..

That was last intel GPU:

My mate had one man it sucked balls. People whining about ati drivers never had one of those !!! Only problems all the time

Even S3 savage was better !!!

What You gonna play on intel integrated GPU FB games tops lol.

Do they release figures for just discreet cards?
Always hate the ones where they include Intel lol, 65% pssh :p

I also want to know how in gods name have AMD declined??

Maybe because they had a superb q3 in which their share was significantly higher than their market share last year. Even nvidias share is down yoy although not as significantly as amd. Intel look to be the real winner:/

Maybe AMD couldn't keep up with demand? I've been hearing how there's massive shortages and prices are cray-cray Stateside, to the point where even miners are holding off.

AMD’s shipments of desktop APUs (heterogeneous GPU/CPUs) jumped 15% from the previous quarter but declined 26.7% in notebooks. AMD’s discrete desktop shipments increased 1.8%, and notebook discrete shipments declined 6.7%. The company’s overall PC graphics shipments decreased 10.4%. Notebook build cycles are specific, and AMD was late with its new parts.

When my GPU was out of commission, I used my HD4600, and well, it ran everything it needed to do at 720p (Batman AO for example)

The latest Haswell IGPs are pretty damn good tbh. Can play borderlands 2 easy on a laptop i know for sure, albeit with some settings turned down. Also played X-Com as well.

Well ye but they suck compared do cheapest dedicated one you can buy.
I do like to have IGPU in case dedicated packs up and you dont have spare one around. But thats about it :P

So basically AMD's market share has increased over 2% (which is impressive considering the total size of the market) which is good news. And the amount of units shipped Q1/14 is down 10% over Q4/13 which isn't nesseserily bad news as down 10% from a record high isn't the same as just plain down (unit sales are still at well above average), the crypto explosion at the end of 2013 really boosted demand but that demand has now been lowered somewhat by the price hike in AMD GPUs and the value drop (and difficulty increase) of cryptos.

When the mining bubble bursts and it will, AMD are screwed

ASIC's for Scrypt mining are starting to ship, which means the difficulty level for most of the alt coins is about to start climbing significantly, so from here on out is just depends how quickly they can ship ASIC's

great news for people wanting cheap 2nd hand radeon cards

But not so great for those that want them to last. Mining 24/7 will take its toll on the GPU and I certainly wouldn't like to take that gamble. I can see a few people getting well and truly caught out.
