I have friend in south africa that wants to visit the uk. Is it correct that he can enter the country by just travelling on holiday and then paying at that border £65 for a general entry visa and stay up to 6 months. Will he have to prove anything when entering the country?

I am asking that question. Is it any different for people from other countries. I know when i go on holiday i don't do any visa stuff, i just fly in and then pay some money at the border and that's all.

If i want to work then that is a different visa.

'Find out' links don't work for me at the moment, but that's where you'll get the info you need. After having a quick look it seems like he'll need to apply for a fee in advance. British passport holders are very lucky so many countries let us in/issue visa on arrival.

And yep it's different for different countries. Some countries let you in without visa, some visa (payment) on arrival, some visa application by post, USA requires ESTA.

Currently, only passport holders from the following countries are eligible to apply under the UK Youth Mobility Scheme:

Australia
New Zealand
Canada
Japan
Monaco
Taiwan

So he is not eligible, to work he would need to apply for a work visa.

So what will happen if he books the ticket and lands at Heathrow with no papers but his passport?

Probably nothing good, I wouldn't risk that. Get him to apply for the visa, then he'll get straight through (unless he looks dodgy on his passport :p).

Links working again on the site I posted above. You can apply online.

I am not asking about a work visa, i am asking about a holiday visa.

Can he just land at Heathrow with a 1 month return and say i am just on holiday, staying at hotels and that's it. get a stamp and pay the £65 and enter the country?

I've had relatives over on holiday from SA, each time we have to write a letter to confirm they are staying with us and they apply for a visa before they depart.

No, the border agency has a criteria you need to pass to qualify for that particular scheme, you need 50 points. It seems he would score a max of 20 if he's under 31 and has more than £1500 in cash available.

To come to the UK as a general visitor, you must be able to show that:

you are 18 or over;
you intend to visit the UK for no more than 6 months (or 12 months if you are coming with an academic visitor);
you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit;
you have enough money to support and accommodate yourself without working or help from public funds, or you and any dependants will be supported and accommodated by relatives or friends;
you can meet the cost of the return or onward journey; and
you are not in transit to a country outside the 'Common Travel Area' (Ireland, the UK, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands).
You must also be able to show that, during your visit, you do not intend to:

take paid or unpaid employment, produce goods or provide services, including the selling of goods or services directly to members of the public;
do a course of study, as long as this study is not the main reason for your visit (see the General visitors page for 'permitted study');
marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership;
carry out the activities of a business visitor, a sports visitor or an entertainer visitor; or
receive private medical treatment.

I'd call them if you're unsure about anything.

It's all standard visa stuff, basically you need an onward flight, don't work, have enough money to support yourself and leave before 6 months. The only different bit about it is the biometric appointment, but he might not even need that (check the exempt list).

ok i see it costs Short-term (up to 6 months, single or multiple entry)
1600 which is about £160 and you have reapply for a visa to go on holiday. I had no idea holiday visa was so strict, i guess we are lucky with uk passport.
