Banished - upcoming city-building strategy

Well, potato town is doing nicely with 50 people, 10,000 food and a mine and a quarry after 15 years. Also managed to take down mumps disease quickly. (and this is my first game still with no tutorial :D)

Had a bit of a scare when all the families decided that a one child policy was a good idea which nearly doomed the future of the village though.

OK things seem to be going pretty well. I have a self sustaining little village with all the main resources covered. I'm in early autumn of year 3 and I've noticed I only have 1 child. They don't seem to be breeding. Full 5 hearts and stars. Resources look good. What am I missing? Do I need to have idle villagers?

You need to build more houses for them to have more children. When ever children grow up they won't reproduce until they move into a house of their own.

I've found that building a house every year seems to keep the babies 'a coming. It's a fine a balance between population expansion and running out of food/starvation.

I'm finding this game very difficult,Things simply take way too long to do no matter how you prioritize stuff. :/

I pretty much only play at 5x or 10x speed. Makes stuff go much quicker :)

I think im on year 6 at the minute. Just built a quarry as was having stone issues. Loving it so far.

Im a little worried a have a large old age population so do need to get more houses built or they might die out.

pathing > priority

you are supposed to build storage buildings near the fishing huts etc

fisherman catches 6 fish, walks to the nearest storage barn which could be at the centre of your village taking him the time it would have taken to catch another 6-12 fish.
he also might decide he is hungry/cold on the way if it's to far.

fisherman catchs 6 fish and deposits them in the storage barn next to it.
returns to fishing a few seconds later.
market stall vendor citizen walks to the barn and takes the fish to the market stall.

I suspect many people are not doing this and that is why you struggle so much because your people are inefficient because of your layout.

also if it is so slow use 5x speed it seems the more normal speed to me and 1x/2x seem like slow motion.

most peoples citizens are probably spending more time walking to places than they are working

I can handle starvation, people dying of broken hearts as their loved ones have shuffled off, drowning, plague or being burned alive due to a rogue spark from the blacksmith, but I had an infestation in my orchard and I had to cut down all my prized pear trees which put a stop to my hooch operation :(

This game is too cruel.

Things are going great in potato land, 34 years, 140 people, loads of seeds, 3 different types of animals and it's totally self sufficient. I can leave it running at 10x speed and not have to micromanage any jobs. Only concern is population and age control but I can leave it running and still have 25000+ food constantly. :)

Lost a few hours to this last night, it's very tough!

I spent a few towns making the mistake of trying to farm from the beginning.

So where can I get a variety of seeds from for new orchards and crops? I don't seem to be able to get anything from traders.

when a trader is docked one of the tabs on the trading station window has an option of what you would like that trader to bring.

they will only bring maybe 1-3 of the items you choose though.

not all of them have seeds/live stock

Thanks. Funny enough I just had one turn up... the seeds aren't cheep are they!

In to about year 11/12 with a population of 32/2/2. Worried about an ageing population as I never really got on top of the children problem.

I never seem to have enough iron and stone - everything else seems to be ticking along quite nicely.

Got to year 50 and gave up. Population stayed even at around 160ish and the only disaster I got was an orchard infestation which wasn't an issue at all. I was actually wanting a disaster to see if I had enough resources stored to survive. Finished with 44,000 food and 2000 wood, everything was broadly spread out in multiple store rooms.

Might try hard mode next time.

I am tempted to get this. Not sure if it is worth £12 though.

What game would you guys say it is most like?

Farmers work when crops/orchards are sown/planted and harvested. They become labourers in the winter. As long as someone is assigned to farming, they will work when it is necessary.

The game is most like Settlers without the combat. Add a touch of Sim City, Anno and Age of Empires for extra taste. Worth the money if you like city builders.

I think it's most like the start-up phase of Anno 1404 - but with much more serious consequences for running short of food/fuel/etc....

I love the artistic style and the gameplay - amazed that so much seems to have been shoe-horned into such a small download :)
