GPU market up—Intel and Nvidia graphics winners in Q4, AMD down

5m consoles is nothing on the massive pc market.

I think its at least 9 million consoles and counting which is hardly 'nothing' (PS4 hasn't been released in Japan as yet - 2 days time). (edit Tommybhoy beat me to it)

I have bought quite a lot of my PC parts second hand but when all those 280x/290's hit MM/ebay they would have to be exceptionally cheap to temp me.

Arm will probably be the long term winners in the grand scheme if AMD/Nvidia/Intel don't react accordingly to miniaturisation.

Wouldn't touch one with a bargepole tbph, core degradation is going to be an issue as they are getting tanked 24/7.

A friend cashed in and sold his 7950 on fleabay, got positive feedback with the new owner happy.

6 weeks later he got a mail saying it was faulty and fleabay/paypal took the payment back out his bank.

He didn't get his cash back until the dispute was settled after carefully worded emails explaining mining/overclocking/poor handling.

That's a disgrace. I never got feedback from the guy i sold my 7990 to, but he never raised a dispute and the 45 days has long since passed so i assume all was ok. That bloke probably never even realised how lucky he got with that 7990. Both gpu core temps were identical at all times.

Agreed! A similar thing happened to a pal of mine all be it with it a little 5850 he sold.

Buyer raised a dispute saying the card was faulty after 4 weeks and got a full refund. Card was tested once he got it back and it was perfectly fine. Ebay can be joke sometimes.

ASIC's for Scrypt mining are starting to ship, which means the difficulty level for most of the alt coins is about to start climbing significantly, so from here on out is just depends how quickly they can ship ASIC's

great news for people wanting cheap 2nd hand radeon cards

When the ASICs took over SHA256 and made impractical to GPU mine that's when Scrypt arrived which was ASIC resistant, Scrypt ASICs aren't even shipping in great numbers yet and we already have coins running the new adaptive Scrypt algorithms which are ASIC proof so can only be GPU mined.

The only real thing scrypt ASICS will do is boost the value of coins already mined, GPU miners will just move onto more profitable coins using the new algorithms like we did before.

So sadly no cheap Radeons anywhere on the horizon :(

I can see retailers and Manufacturers getting fed up with mining in truth. I can see a lot of people who will mine 24/7 with the cards going full pelt and failing, with people abusing the warranty (that is what it is there for).

Manus will find a way to build clockometers in to cards, and warranty will then be based on clock cycles or time, like the 3 year or 10k mile warranty you can get with a car.

But not so great for those that want them to last. Mining 24/7 will take its toll on the GPU and I certainly wouldn't like to take that gamble. I can see a few people getting well and truly caught out.

Rubbish, Cards are designed to run for 100,000 hours, maybe mining for a year might reduce the life of a card from 10 years to 8 years. I would trust a card that has been mining solidly over most second hand cards. A mining card will have to be run in a stable and constant environment. Downtime costs money.

Buying a mining cards poses no more risk than buying any second hand card.

You crack on then Mel but knowing what I know, I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

If i was going second hand and the price was right id still take a card that has been mining. So long as it was from a reputable seller.

Knowing what you know? i find it extremely difficult to get laymen enough with you half the time, so what do you know that we don't?

What is it you know m8?

I am just rather curious that is all, I've had a 6970 since launch. It was hammered when I got it at launch, it was abused in games, it was then set in a workstation doing work task.

It then spent an entire year mining Bitcoin, when it was still profitable to do so, it has since spent its time mining alt coins.

So its had 3yrs are hard use with nearly two years being 24/7 mining and it still works flawlessy whether gaming, office work or mining.

So I am curious as to what you think might happen? Does OcUK see cards being returned due to mining? Yes, but only because people seem to do well stupid things, like put 4 cards all right next to each other, with zero airflow, they don't try and configure the cards or undervolt them, they simply mine on them at stock speeds, with no fan profile until they die. We've seen a lot of burnt out cards which we've also seen from gaming crossfire machines too. The returns are reducing as more and more people are getting smarter and being educated, to ensure the cards have airflow and to setup fan profiles, lower voltages etc. etc.

P.S. Got a 7970 which has seen similar use since launch as well, again it works without issue and its being battered 24/7 without issue. :D

You answered for me Gibbo. People return cards that are mining, you even stated in a thread "Do not buy these cards if you intend on mining, as they keep failing", so why would I have confiden e in buying a second hand mining card.

By all means, people who want to save money and gamble on a card that has been mining, go for it.

I like to think i do my bit for the OcuK AMD GPU rma section Gibbo. :p

What is it you know though Greg? Let us drink from your fountain of knowledge. :p
