GTX 780 to R9 290?

For mining the 290 will be the better card. In games though both perform pretty much the same. Though the 290 will support mantle in a few upcoming games which when running properly will give a boost. 780 will use less power and run cooler assuming you will be using a reference cooled 290.

Great answer, straight to the point.

Ta!

No point buying 290 with ref cooler as it throttles itself due to the heat, especially if you are mining.

Only if you use the stock fan profile which is very lazy. A fan speed of 50%+ or higher is enough to stop a 290 throttling and running in the mid 80's.

Seems a weird sidestep. Only reason I can see doing it is if you intended to use the card for mining. Otherwise id stick with the 780.

I've alternated between a 290 and a 780.

Had a Gigabyte Winforce 3x 780 that flashed with custom BIOS and was running at 1.3Ghz.

Now have a Sapphire 290 Tri X and the Sapphire card is faster in everything except for one game... Crysis 3!!

That's with 100mhz less on the 290 core too! At the same clocks the 290 just wins in everything.

Keep with 780.
I've gone from 680 to 290x and endless problems with black screens and seems pretty common fault with drivers.
Gone back to 680 and RMAing 290x

You didn't specify the model of your GTX780

For gaming they will be close, for mining the R9 290 by a mile.

Have had both, no real difference in performance and cooling with aftermarket versions. All depends on whether you mine or not. I went with 290 because I want Mantle.
