Evening, would appreciate some help...

Are there any companies that 'specialise' in new drivers? I've only just got my provisional license (working on my practical test) but can't find any companies willing to give me quote.

The cars i'm looking at are in group 49 so probably doesn't help my case much.

Any suggestions?

I would suggest that a car in insurance group 49 is probably a particularly silly idea for a first time driver, which is exactly why insurance companies run away screaming when you approach them.

Get something more modest, get some experience and when you become less of a huge risk insurers will be happy to cover you.

Insurance groups don't tend to make as much difference as people say, but nonetheless insuring a group 49 car is ambitious as a first time driver. What car is it and what type of car are you looking for?

According to Parkers, group 49 includes the Audi R8, SC Range Rovers and AMG Mercedes'. My suggestion would be to stop dreaming and get something more realistic (Or a mortgage to cover the premium)

You'll just get priced ridiculous amounts because the companies will not be interested if they have your business or not. Unless you're loaded that is.

Based on the other thread are you looking at 911's  That's a tad optimistic for a new driver :D

*Edit* I see its probably the BMW 6 Series GC you're looking at.

Making sweeping assumptions here of course but I would have thought that if you can afford a £60k+ car that would be in insurance group 49 then you really shouldnt be worrying about a paltry few grand a years insurance would be.

edit - seems it is at least your money - appologies!

It's not really about the money, the reason why drivers with zero experience must pay through the nose to drive very powerful expensive cars is because they don't have the experience to not end up in a mess with them.

Even if you can afford it there are many more modest choices available to the discerning wealthy new driver. You don't need to go straight to the supercar. You won't have the ability to enjoy it yet anyway.

Probably worth mentioning I do have a car and can drive, just haven't had one in the UK / US or EU.

It's a 640d Gran Coupe M Sport or a CLS 63

What's with the talk about 'dreaming', being 'silly' and 'realistic ?!

You are legally obligated to have insurance to drive, as such there should be cover for every situation. I expect it to be expensive - but will still need it.

So why describe yourself as a 'first time driver'? Somebody who has driven previously overseas is not a 'first time driver'.

I bet it's particularly difficult to decide between a 3 litre diesel or a 6.2 litre V8. Wait, what?

I'm suprised the 640d is Group 49, I must admit.

The insurers see me as 'first time driver' regardless of my driving history. Basis the question in my opening post it's a reasonable statement to make - as i'm looking to get insurance.

Ignoring your sarcasm, it is actually quite difficult to decide! For the money a 3 litre diesel is paltry. I've enquired about the 650i (even new) and a new order takes about 3 months - longer than i'm willing to wait.

The CLS has an amazing engine that justifies it's price but has what looks like a 4 year old interior.

I wouldn't really consider myself wealthy. I move about quite a bit and I'm reasonably compensated for the inconvinience.

I take it you have held a driving license issued in another country for a number of years but new to driving in the UK?

You need to find a good insurance broker, should be able to get insured in pretty much anything if you have the cash.

May be worth getting you full license and getting a year no claims in your current car first though.

How old are you and what car do you have already?

It is quite annoying, I'm guessing it's based on list price. Without even haggling you can get close to £15K - £20K off these which puts it (with the options i'm looking for) at about £60K.

Forgive me for being cynical but you wouldn't be the first person to make a thread similar to this on here and have it never actually end with a car being bought. I'd love to be proven wrong though so good luck!

Edit: Didn't see your other thread about actually buying, be interesting to see how you end up on the insurance and what kind of policy you come up with :)

Thanks mate,

I have indeed been driving for about 4 years now. I'm in my high 20's :p Where can I find an insurance broker?

I don't have any car at the moment

Just an example of a broker for you as they are local to me in Norwich and we have used them for insurance in the past for car and business insurance.

Obviously there are lots of brokers out there and you should call around and explain your situation, find somewhere local to you, go in an sit with someone.
With the amount of money you will have to spend I am sure people will be happy to sort you out.

Thanks mate, looks exactly like what I need.

From some of the feedback it appears some readers have the impression this was an attempt to gloat or show-off. I've called about 6 different insurers and filled out many many more online with no joy. I asked here because of the wide readership and variety of experience.

If it does end up being really silly money (my budget is around £5K a year) then i'll probably have to look for something cheaper - problem is i don't really like anything else.

I don't like the E class or the A6 which leaves the GS, XJ and 5 series. The 5 would be the obvious choice if wasn't (much like the E) so ubiquitous.
