First time driver Insurance group 49

No problem a broker is kind of like the online compare sites but a bit more personal.
To be honest I think you will be looking at more than £5K a year for the first year due to the lack of UK experience and the value of the cars you are looking at, may be look for something you like that is a year old and costs a bit less.
Since you are over 25 though, once you get a year no claims on a full UK licence it should drop by a good amount.
I am sure a broker can talk you through viable options once they have all your info.

Through experience, no matter what car you get your first years insurance is always a bad rip off. I remember paying £350 a month for a Punto at the age of 18... at the time half my wages were going on a crap car each month. Doesn't last long though, then you can start looking (dreaming in my case) at group 49 cars with more realistic insurance premium.

Any way of getting into a fleet policy? More lenient with age.. At 18 I was hovering around in a 330d quite easily and 22 saw me into a 996 for very reasonable money.

Just curious, what license do you currently hold? Can't you exchange it for a full UK one?
Is NCB from other countries not transferable? That's a bit silly really with the amount of migration happening these days.

I agree to sit down with a broker and fully explain your situation, as with this thread. your background could easily be misunderstood when filling out online applications etc.

Good luck

p.s. CLA45 maybe be an option for a fast coupe-looking premium sedan in a lower group?

Thanks for the suggestions, I will find an engage a broker. I don't think the company has a fleet policy but i'll check.

Thanks again for the help.

Just a thought, could you insure in the country your license is from with international (or just UK) cover?

I'm 21, drive an E350 AMG Mercedes and pay £800 a year. It is possible but it's very much dependant on your location as well.

Remember, insurance doesn't just cover your driving. It's other people plus the risk of theft etc etc....

You don't drive an 'AMG Mercedes' so it's not really that useful to somebody who wants to buy an ACTUAL AMG Mercedes. You've got an E350 'Sport', effectively, not an actual AMG.

A nice car but it's obviously going to be miles cheaper to insure than proper AMG.

I loved the fact I test drove a 1.6 diesel A Class that most people would call an 'AMG Mercedes'. Brand dilution at its finest.

As for the OPs situation, mainstream insurers are not going to be the best bet. You want someone small and willing to speak to you and take your full driving history into account.

Was based in Senegal and Cameroon.

To update the thread...

I had a look over at PistonHeads to get more suggestions and came across Adrian Flux. Has anyone here used them and do they have a good reputation?

They gave me a quote of around £2K a year but with a £3,000 excess! Is that reasonable? I called a few brokers and should have some feedback tomorrow.

Adrian Flux have recently quoted me on a specialist car and came back with a decent price. I've only heard good things about them.

I've no idea what insurance group my car is (I think it was 20 when the groups were done out of 20) but I insured it at the age of 21 with 0 NCB for just over £1k so silly cars can be insured for young or inexperienced drivers.

My mum used to be insured with Adrian flux, they were fine right up until she cancelled the policy due to her stopping driving, and instead of refunding her for a few months insurance they charged her a cancellation fee. Seems pretty poor when companies like admiral will happily refund in such circumstances.

Insure the excess?

Interesting option; I'll pursue, thanks.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll give their T&C's a thorough read through. I'm glad I wasn't mad in assuming a specialist insurer existed for my peculiar situation.
