Just got this (had to borrow a PS3 off a mate!) and I seem dreadful at combat, and must have died 5/6 times. I am very early on in the game, but somehow keep wiping, then having to spend 10% of coins is rubbish!

Does anyone have any specific tips for combat for early game? I am playing normal difficulty. I have never played a JRPG before

Just got to the large Mouse boss fight to free the Cat King

Currently enjoying post game but there is one thing that bugs me although is silly, spoiler re ending

Drippy says to you something like "Isn't it about time we go and visit Queen Callioapea(sp)" but you cannot visit her again after everything as the save is before the last fight :( I ALWAYS get annoyed with this on RPGs, I want to go around the world and speak to people afterwards to see what they have to say etc.

The Dean, one thing I learned early on is that spamming attack doesn't really work unless you are very overpowered. You need to make use of the defend and evade skills in order to get the 'nice' and chances of golden glims etc. This isn't so important on normal enemies but it is on boss fights. I suggest sticking with the default familiars for pretty much the whole game (obviously you can use others you tame), try to use familiars that each character prefers (indicated by the genus icon when you select the switch command). Try to get a good mix of skills too, so if you can have at least one familiar for each character who can heal etc. I don't want to start naming familiars to get as I believe this is a big part of the game in discovering.

Just ordered this for £22 :D ive played the demo and seemed good. Loved the voice acting and music and i'm a big fan of Studio Ghibli.

Any starting tips? e.g. which monster to focus on leveling or is it just personal preference?

I ordered this too when it was flagged on HUKD. 2 days shipping so I expect to see it Monday at the earliest.

Mine arrived today. This is a stupid question but how do u know if item is new or is used? It wasnt shrink wrapped and just had the store seal sticker prevdnting opening.

anything different about used version?

Yep. disc & manual and register card thingy...it doesnt feel like a used version i guess...no shrinkwrap just makes me sceptical.

I did think the same to be honest. The box also had a split where you put your fingers in to open it. It does look new though other than that.

A few hours into this and its not too bad at all....reminds me a bit of dragon quest X (8 or 10)

Excellent graphics and cutscenes very seamless
Superb music some exploring music actually sounded raiders of the lost ark ish (not the main theme)

Negatives

Quick respawning enemies in dungeons....you kill them and backtrack literally a few squares away and they have respawned hrmmm annoying! Surprised no one mentioned or was bothered by this i guess.

Storyline is a bit simple e.g. u figure out immediately where a certain creature has gone but u have to jump through hoops of the story (aimed at a young audience for sure)........maybe its just part of the hand holding at this stage of the game.

game is still good and mitey is a cutie

It's not much of a spoiler, but if enemy respawns are bothering you, you can get a spell from a sidequest called Veil that makes you invisible to enemies :p

It does hand hold lots at the start, but that stops. Really really enjoyed it myself. Just felt it lacked over all content when I thought back after finishing it, But I like to think that proves how good the game actually is that I'd of loved the thing to be twice as long!

Can this be played with part one downloaded from the store (6Gb) while the remainder downloads in the background? First part downloaded and installed and it has appeared on the PS3 home screen.

Edit: evidently not! Said it's not installed properly.

I'm absolutely loving this game. I don't think I've ever finished an RPG before except Pokemon, but this has me hooked. It seems to be a rare breed of almost magical feeling games. Even Zelda has gone stale on the most recent generation of consoles, and this is a real blast of the past. Brilliant.

Sorry for digging up this thread but, ive just started playing this and absolutely loving it so far!

No need to be sorry it was one of the best JRPG's for a long time, even people who don't normally like JRPG's loved it. If it wasn't for all the other stuff I've got I'd play it again :)
