Looking for a new motor...

My wife pointed one out actually...I just thought they were pointless rubbish though. What are they like compared to the standard 5 series?
Bigger and more comfortable. Much more rear legroom than an F10 but not as much load space (with the seats up) as a Touring.

Longer wheelbase makes for a more comfortable ride but Adaptive Drive is a just IMO. More cumbersome to park and around town but coming from a Range Rover I can't foresee any problems.

Usually can be found with a better spec than the F10. (Comfort seats, rear TVs..)
Unloved and the prices reflect this.
There are a few 535 GTs in your budget as well.

Basically the same but with more luggage space due to the horrific backend bulge. Like someone with a fat arse that doesn't look quite right on their body. I'd have to agree with Geekman on the Jaaaaaag choice on exterior aesthetics alone.
This is not true. Due to the slope of the rear screen there is less space with the seats up.
I believe it is bigger with the seats down however.

I hadn't considered one tbh, nor the Jag XJ..I assumed they would be out of my budget.

The GT is a very awkward looking car. This is primarily why its so cheap, most people do not like how it looks. It's basically a 7 series hatch badged as a 5. If you can get over the looks its probably the best value luxury car on the used market right now.

These are all based on the A5 platform that came out in 2007. It's really an E90 generation car. It is due for replacement soon. I wouldnt be spending big money on one of these, if you don't mind a car thats a bit more dated inside save a pile of cash.

These are both 520d's. I often drive a 520d now and I'm still not a 4 cylinder diesel engine fan. However if you are somebody who gets in and drives and isn't particularly bothered about the power delivery and feel you get from a lovely 6 cylinder engine then perhaps a 520d might be the answer. They are not underpowered and with the 8 speed autobox they drive reasonably nicely. If you like them, you'll find it very easy to get a reasonably new or high spec car for the money.

You can get a 530d for your budget - the 2010 examples are now comfortably under £25k if you don't want an M Sport.

This one is £20k and has all the spec you need. The only thing wrong with it is the horrible silver trim that ruins the cabin ambience:

This one has incredible specification, Park Assist is self-parking - it scans for a space and then reverse parks itself.

Looks the same spec I think. Mine has 55K on the clock but just renewed the warranty to the top of the range no excess model, but to be fair that will come with 12 months. Would need to bring mine down to 24's to compete with that. About to tax, re-tyre (rears) and MOT mine this week. Other than that and a good detail mine is a bang on.

When you say soon...how far off is that?

I have looked at the Audi A5 in both Coupe and Sportback and really like the interior (and the exterior)..it doesn't look dated to me. Is there any other reason to avoid them other than the styling?

I have yet to test drive one, I have an appointment with my local BMW dealer later in the week to test drive a range of cars. including the 520d and 530d.

Thanks...it looks like I will have to look much further afield then.

How does yours compare with:

The prices for these are all over the place, it seems that dealers price them completely randomly. There is another for similar money thats a year older

I like that one and that is within budget, well more or less.

With the new reg in march, is it worth waiting a month to see what is traded in etc? will you be able to get discounts more easily etc?

It really is bizarre how expensive the 5 Series still is generally. I have noticed this evening that the equivalent E Class is generally thousands of pounds less expensive for the same trim level, engine option, age and mileage. There is a wide selection of 2010 E350 CDI Sport for circa £20k yet you need to get nearer £25k to find a 2010 530d M Sport.

I personally think the F10 is a better car but this is personal opinion and does not in itself explain why the 5 Series are advertised at so much more money?

Rattle, squeak, rattle, squeak, rattle etc........Changed mine (59 coupe) recently, company car and could not wait to see the back of it. Interior is dated and material quality very poor, particularly the hand brake enclosure and the rear parcel shelf. Honestly, please do not throw £20K at this however (good!) they look from the outside!

Edited to add I forgot having to dismantle the above head interior light and pad with kitchen roll to try and eliminate yet another rattle...........Quality car.

that is strange as it goes against everything else I have read and the one person who I know has a 2009 A5 2.0tdi S line, who says the opposite from what you have said. I think that whether it looks dated or not is a matter of preference, and as for the rattles and poor quality, like I said that seems to be the opposite from every review and report I have seen thus far. I mean Audi's are supposed to be famous for their excellent quality interiors. Is this true across the A4/5 range?
