I'm currently sat here watching Tarmac & numerous other companies resurface the road outside my house which is about 1.2 miles long & will apparently take them 7 nights to do from 19:00 to 05:00.

I'm curious as to why they are resurfacing a road that has not a single pothole & is silky smooth to drive along when there are roads only a few miles away that look like the surface of the moon that desperately need work?

Any ideas?

Mostly just to inconvenience you :p

They could do with visiting Sheffield, some of the 'roads' are like driving over a field. I don't know whether to go fast and let the suspension do its thing (30mph) or slow (10mph) along them. Certainly no need for speed bumps :/

Do you live on that A57 bypass or something  It's starting to do my head in, I swear they laid down the road then tore it back up again.

Move to Gateford, much better :D

They could be replacing the tarmac grade for something quieter, different drainage characteristics, etc. Try looking on your county council's website, sometimes they list planned roadworks and will give a synopsis of what works are being carried out.

I wish they would do the entrance to my road. The Mars curiosity rover has an easier time navigating than I do.

They did this near me too. A perfect road being resurfaced over 5 nights but then you drive another 600m down the road and there's an atrocious road caused by gas works over the years where they've ripped up the road, resurfaced it so badly and then tried to repair the pot holes every time.

Why can't they resurface potholes properly with the melted tar on the edges to stop the debris from getting pushed out after 2 days and making the pothole worst.

I assume it must be due to requests? People will tend to complain about the road outside their house, but I doubt they get many requests about major roads that most traffic just passes over and on to a far away destination?

The major road through my town has some proper craters on it, but 99% of the traffic on it don't live anywhere near, so just drive on. Meanwhile, like you, the residential street where I used to live was resurfaced for no apparent reason.

You can see a crater forming just below the B in the centre of the road. This pic was taken ages ago. It's now a huge hole that's been repatched about 5 times.

There are hundreds of pot holes along this road. I constantly have to weave in and out of the road all the time.

Cost. The council will employ a term maintenance contractor who should carry out all such works as and when required. The problem is, the incumbent TM contractor might not have much incentive to do a good job, may use cheap labour and cut corners.

This times a billion, horrible roads around here. My fiesta is in 24/7 pain, makes me want to swap my car for something with a bigger wheel size to compensate. Near me theres a section of road that is unpassable due to the pot hole, everyone has to wait for a clear in on coming traffic to get past...:(

they need just a white van with a skip full of ready to go tarmac in the back. just drive around at night (so next to no traffic) and then pull over by a pot hole, filler 'er up and pat 'er down. drive onto the next. in a week I think most of our city streets would be alright....ish :p

there are just some many that are getting worse and worse out and about.

thinking back to that episode of "My name is Earl" where he's trying to repay a debt from being given too much tax back (but the tax office won't take the money back) so he goes to fill in a pot hole. the cops then show up and make him dig it up because it's not done officially xD rather have Earl filling the pot holes then just leave them as at night they can be sneaky if you haven't seen them before.

Jokes aside, this is what the 'professionals' do anyway. They don't do a good job though and that's why the same tarmac filled in pothole just becomes another pothole again when all the tarmac is driven out by cars and trucks.

They need to seal the pothole properly with that hot melty black stuff.

yeah I know what ya mean, the runny drizzly stuff that shines on the joint :)

well even if that's what they do... they don;t do it often enough, seen the same pot holes for months now. think we put more time and money into my parents dirt track then the council do repairing pot holes.

and they won't allow us to tarmac/semi-permanent the dirt track, even out of our own pockets because it's common land :p and the track can get SHOCKINGLY bad! the thousands spent on chippings and hiring diggers to clear out water run offs and lay the chippings.... only to have half of it wash away a year later due to massive down pours.... joys of living in wales on a hill ;) haha!

Why would you want a bigger wheel size? That means smaller tyre profile and worse ride. You want tiny wheels like the good old days, with big sidewalls :)

They have someone coming a month later to replace some pipes, and they want the road nice for the water company to ruin?
