My top card is getting into the 90s after an hour gaming but my bottom card is in the high 60s. What is up with this? I know the top card is always hotter but this just doesn't seem right? I figured low 80s for top card and 60s for bottom? was that just false hope?

Double check the fans are all working when under load.

What case are you using?

Try using a custom fan profile then report back.

How is your case airflow? With two cards dumping heat inside the case you'll want as many side exhaust fans as you can muster.

That seems crazy high... my top card doesnt go above 73 on auto fan... In furmark with 80% fan speed it wasn't going above 60 degrees. Its definatly not normal as these are the coolest cards on air that iv ever owned.

yea that is what I thought. I am using a phantom 410 with the stock fans that were included. 1 back, 1 top, 1 front. I have never had problems with airflow until now.

First thing I did was check the fans on the cards. This 2nd 290 is from the recent lot from Overclockers and does not have the sapphire bios flashed on it, so it is at stock clocks. That is the top card and the hot card so I figured that as the culprit but I don't think the bios matters much in that regard.

Swap them around to see if its the card or the air flow causing the problem :)

Did same with my cards only to discover that the hot top card also ran hot when the bottom card...therefore was the card not poor airflow causing the problem.

I think it is airflow. I turned the top cards fan up to 80% and now both sit in the 60s during benches.

I know this is a graphics thread but what cases do you recommend for maximum airflow and room? I was thinking phantom 820. My 410 seemed like a beast until two of these footlong cards were in it. Now it seems small and airflow isn't optimum though it is do able. I wanted to go quadfire eventually and get the kraken pre-installed 290s from overclockers store.

Hi there

Space them further apart, 290's are like little fan heaters, when close together the top card get heated up, move the slave card a slot lower if possible.

Or something else that works, put a fan extracting air from the case on the side panel right alongside the cards, normally good for a 10c reduction.

If i turn the fan up on my hot card it runs at normal temp....could still be the card running hot and not the airflow causing problem....easier to swap cards around than to get new case only to find out its the card itself running hot for some reason...just my 2 cents :)

gpu-z is saying my 290 I moved to the bottom has a 32 bit bus width? Is this because it isn't active?

Also it has been saying this one has 2816 shaders. Like it's a 290x? It works fine but why is GPU-z giving me this reading? My mobo is gigabyte GA-z77x-ud3h and has two 3.0 pice slots ar x16 and x8.

This is normal for the secondary card when idle.

okay awesome. that is good. sorry for the typos in that one, you only realize it once someone quotes you :)

I am thinking about getting a phantom 820 and Asus Maximus V mobo to help with airflow and room.

Why is my card showing the shaders of a 290x and the texture filrate etc. It's just a normal 290... I have heard of 290s being unlocked to 290x's. Is this one of those lucky cards? I don't think I am going to mess with it, but I am curious.

Disable ULPS jkt in Afterburner Beta 18 (use it instead of overdrive) and restart your pc. Once that is down gpu-z will display the correct info.

What PSU are you using mate?

I had an AX860 but it wasn't enough for two of these in crossfire so just had a 1000w come today. wasted money but what can you do. ill just sell the ax860

I am using a corsair hx 750 watt. It isnt powering down in games or anything but the perfomance is wayy off. The 2nd GPU isn't doing much and fluctuates with the top card, only one can get high usage at a time it seems... I didn't think this was a psu problem though... I thought the computer would power off if that was the case.

okay I used 13.12 drivers. I have used both cards solo and they both cool fine but when together the top gets real hot. The phantom 410 doesn't seem to be cutting it so I am thinking of going with the 820.

Do you think that will make a big difference with cooling? Or is it mostly spacing with the motherboard?
