Very recently I have noticed that my graphics card has been running very hot. (high 90s C) it regularly makes quite a racket when the fan speeds up for cooling and its been much more noisy recently. After a good clean out of fluff from the fan and ports it was still running very hot.

Last night, though, it was peaking at 105C which seem a bit much. It was also not running the fan as usual but was running in frequently in very short bursts - so short that it could not have any effect. The above temperature was reached with just a few minutes of Skyrim.

So, my question - are these high temperature normal for this card or is there something wrong with it. At the moment it is working OK but I wonder how long it will continue at these high temperatures.

Reference card?

It may be time to re-apply the TIM and maybe new thermal pads if it needs any, it might have dried out? Also I'd run a custom fan profile until you do as 105c is far too hot.
 
Something is VERY wrong there.

I'd guess it was full of fluff and overheating, but now the fan appears faulty as it is HOT and you say the fan is not running all the time. That won't end well.:(

You need to get the fan running all the time. Maybe a dodgy fan connection or something on the cooler was dislodged when cleaning it?:confused:
 
Mine used to touch 90c, rarely, in the summer..

Take a can of compressed air to the heatsink and fan and reapply the TIM. Also worth making sure airflow on the case is all good.

EDIT: Find it funny that you're having heat problems and your forum name is prescott... blast from the past :D
 
Thanks for the advice, guys. I'll give it a go.

And, yes, Rossi, I joined the forums after I bought my Prescott and motherboard - it wasn't a bad chip and it did heat the house too!
 
Local tech support (me!) has had a look and the old thermal compound was a disaster - it had gone all like blu tack and wasn't really covering the heatsink at all!

Dropped some arctic silver on it and try as I might I couldn't get the heatsink back on properly - maybe the screws are 1 time use? Anyway - thought I had it back on and dropped it back in the PC.

Fan spinning at full whack the entire time and running at 97C just in windows then the screens shut off - automatic heat throttling maybe? A second crack at running the machine resulted in much the same problem followed by the heat sink falling off :/

Needless to say I think the card is on the way out unless I can fix the heat sink in any meaningful way!

On that note what would you guys recommend in a sub £200 replacement? I'm happy with my Radeon 7850 which goes for as little as £130. Sadly not up to speed on anything more current!

760 would be a nice improvement.
 
If you want to stick with a Radeon then an r9 270x is probably your best bet in terms of value. You'd still have a decent bit of change left over from £200 too (especially if you get a BF4 version and can sell the code on).

After that, r9 280x/GTX 770s start at around the £230/£240 mark. They're worth the extra if you can reach for it. If not, 270x.

edit: the one you've linked is fine. If you don't use multi-monitors then there's a 2gb version for £161.99 with BF4 as well.

Looks like a decent card but takes 1 x 8pin and 1 x 6pin PCI-E power, my dads PSU is ancient and creaky :p

Couldn't quite justify the 280/770 range so have gone for the one I linked. My dad currently uses multi monitors as well :)
