I've noted that a lot of people have extensive digital movie library's..
And I'm wondering where are the best places to legally download or purchase movies or TV box sets.

I've got a Synology NAS that I use to house all my media..

I know you can download from ITunes and use services like UV but I don't know if these allow you to download the actual file to stream or distribute as you need?

There are very few places (if any) that allow you to download movies DRM free to do with as you wish. Just about every service I can think of has limits on playback, time limits or requires a continual monthly subscription to access the movies.

The only option I can think of is buy the DVD/Blu and rip it to your NAS.

I'm pretty sure Blinkbox used to allow this as I have Star Trek and 2001 Space Odyssey on my HDD and they are from there a long time ago. Not sure if it's changed more recently.

Ripping may be the only option :(

I've only got a Mac mini tho.. And they don't offer a blu ray super drive yet!

I'm trying my best not to illegally download but it's being far to awkward trying to do it legally!

Is stripping the file of DRM a big issue?

ATM I'm specifically looking for Game of Thrones S2&3..

Unfortunately, that's the situation. They're bending over so far backwards trying to "protect" what digital sales they do get, that they're driving people into illegal downloading/ripping.

is it still technically illegal to buy physical bluray media then rip it to another portable format ???

I have 16tb of nas storage full of my own personal bluray rips. The originals are boxed up in the loft.

Considering the price of digital downloads, I find it cheaper to buy them from ebay, or the rain forest deals.

No idea if it's legal to do this when you own the bluray?

I usually rip with makemkv, selecting only the main film, english audio and all english subs

Then load the mkv into handbrake, select the apple tv 3 settings (and select foreign sub title search). You are left with a fantastic movie and have the subs for only the foeign speaking bits (if there are any).

oh, and to make them look pretty, I run the file through subler which pulls in all the itunes data and artwork

Pretty sure you only own (bad word) the content loaded onto the disc, but to be honest. Who cares? I don't have a DVD player so I stream the movies to my PC however I still own all the discs.

It's illegal to break copy protection on a disc, whatever purpose it's for (ie, even your own backups).

If you rip with MakeMKV and the disc has any form of copy protection, you're breaking the law.

[link] (I don't know if the law's changed in the last year, but that's the most up-to-date explanation I've seen).
