I been looking at both these cars recently and finding it hard to choose which one to go for. I've test drove both and all is good except the BMWfelt a bit cramped for space compared to the golf.

Both have similar performance, the golf is more expensive but has more tech.
£30 road tax on the golf compared to £125.00 on the BMW.

Anyone had any experience with these cars?

Had a 120d for 6 months and 'cramped' is not the right word, it's bordering on super mini size, switched to a Mk5 Golf 5 Door which is an all-round nicer place to be.

1 Series is for the badge, that’s why I bought one and almost immediately regretted it…. But that’s just me.

.

My wife's Mk6 Golf GT is nice car, much bigger interior than the my mates 118d, and I would go for the Golf over the BMW. I suspect the running costs of the Golf will be better than the BMW as well.

Yeah I assumed the running cost will be lower considering it shuts off two cylinder when under load which is good but could mean potentially more stuff to go wrong

1-series was Fifth Gear's Supermini of the year 2004. Cost about twice as much as everything else in the category! People see the badge and common sense seems to go out of the window. I'd take the Golf, then at least people will let you out of junctions.

What year are we talking here? The previous shape 116i was dire but the current shape is far quicker than it's humble badge would suggest.

I was going to ask the same question as Fox.

From 2011 the 1 Series is larger and has more powerful and efficient engines

Golf for me. I found the 1 series too small in the back to be practical with the kids.
The 1 Series has a bigger boot through. e..g buggy can lie flat vs only upright in the Golf. Also the split fold rear seats in the Golf are in the wrong place to fold them with a child seat in place. You have to remove the seat, you dont in the 1 Series.

Purely on looks alone the Golf wins, the 1 series has a face not even a mother can love :p

General ownership costs will be better on the Golf too. The newer 1'er is a bit better inside in terms of quality, but it still feels a bit cheap, but I suppose folk buy the lesser engined version for the badge rather than the ultimate driving machine experience.

Never driven either but I would pick the golf, if you looking for a solid family car they are the one to go for. Hold their value well too. If you where looking at a GTi or 135M then that would be a different mater.

Golf for me, it looks far better than the new 1 series and I reckon you will get marginally better economy out of the engine too. Im also guessing the 116i will be a fairly low specced car whereas the GT has a very good spec as standard as its fairly high up in the range.

Get one with more power :p

It seems like you're swaying towards the Golf as it has more spec and you said the BMW felt cramped.
