OK, this might end up being a relatively long post. Also my description may or may not be great - I'm just hoping that someone may be able to help me on this :)

So, I have an Onkyo surround sound system. Cannot remember model number off the top of my head, however don't think that is important at this stage.
Connected to the tuner I have the following:

SkyHD Box. Connected via HDMI and Optical (so I can have 5.1) to the CBL/SAT input on the receiver

PS3. Connected via HDMI to the GAME input on the receiver.

Our television (Samsung ES6900 Series) is connected via HDMI to the receiver as the output.

This all works fine. Simple selection of the input on the Onkyo remote and I get 5.1 from the SkyHD and PS3.
Very occasionally we watch programs via the built-in Freeview tuners on the television. Not often I'll grant, but sometimes there are 2 things recording at the same time etc.
To the question - what do I need to do to get the sound from the built-in Freeview tuners to go through the Onkyo surround-sound system?

I've got 2 inputs left on the receiver, BD/DVD & VCR/DVR, so no problems there. I'm also going to assume that I need to run an optical cable from the TV into one of the Inputs on the receiver.
However my very initial tests have resulted in no sound at all or more often the sound still coming from the TV's built-in speakers - even though I'm selecting the correct input on the Onkyo receiver.

I'm now assuming that there is a setting I need to change somewhere on the Samsung TV that tells it to send the sound down the optical out only - so that will then get to the receiver.
Does anyone know which setting and where that setting might be found?
I guess I'm looking for someone with a fairly modern Samsung TV who sends sound from the built-in Freeview tuners to ANY surround-sound system and what settings did you need to change on the TV?

Cheers for any help.

I just turned the TV's volume to zero after plugging an optical lead from the TV to my soundbar.

I then control volume using my soundbar remote.

Otherwise I would have sound coming from the TV and the soundbar.

So your getting sound from both the receiver and the TV when watching Freeview?

Might be a simply case of turning down the sound on the TV, some older TV's you had to do this (mine for an example )

Why do you have optical and hdmi for your sky box? You dont need the optical. Use the optical for your tv instead. You could also try and see if your equipment supports ARC which would allow the sound to use the HDMI cable fro the tv back to the receiver. Check the small print on in your TV manual though, some TVs wont output 5.1 over certain outputs.
