Yer nan's knickers
I had the misfortune of using Windows 8 a long time ago, when it was relatively new still. Still having a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth from Vista, I decided there and then that I would avoid it. 5 minutes with it made me want to stab my eyeballs out with a spoon.

So I resisted. And I resisted. Until this week. My wife has started an online learning course, so I bought her a nice spangly new laptop. With Windows 8.

Having taken the time to give it a chance, I decided after an hour that it was hopeless. There was simply no way I was going to get on with this abomination of an OS.

Thing is, I *could* have survived if her college wasn't running their remote login system on Server 2003. I am forced to run this on IE and I can't for the life of me get it to work on her new laptop. I've tried everything, and gotten all the errors to sod off except the one telling me that I'm using a 32bit copy of Windows XP (seriously?).

I've tried all the tricks, to no avail. I will this evening be spending my Friday night formatting a brand spanking new laptop and installing Windows 7 on it.

Well done Microsoft. Thanks for flogging your **** to us once again.

I feel your pain, I installed it on a new build last week and think I suffered it for about 24 hours before going back to Windows 7, my thoughts were if I wanted to play with blocks I would have bought Lego. It took my new build and made me feel like I was playing with an Hudl, shame on you microborg :(

Fascinating stuff I'm sure, but couldn't you have added your moans to one of the 4,587 existing threads "debating" the pros and cons of Windows 8, rather than creating yet another one?

Trouble with that is, there's little point in upgrading to Win8+Start8 if you already have a Win7 licence. :)

They made numerous improvements to the core Explorer functionality in 8 that justify upgrading over 7 for me at least.

OP it sounds like your trying to run some ancient piece of software probably designed around specific versions of Internet Explorer. You can't really blame Windows 8 for that... perhaps you should have checked that before buying.

ah yes, Windows 8

The first Microsoft operating system which made me go out and buy a Mac (seriously). Windows 8.1 is just as bad!

Huh, why not just stick with Windows 7? I assume you were on Windows 7 and then 8 came along and you threw it down the stairs and bought a Mac?

true
also if the login stuff is running server 2003 then it may not even work on win7's IE

Probably, but thanks for your valued opinion on the matter. It means a lot, it really does.

Currently, your opinion on Windows 8 matters just as much.

No sane person would consider using Windows XP over 8; certainly not beyond April.

XP, while certainly a fantastic operating system for so long, is utterly horrific to use now. It's painful having to use it.

I use 7 and 8 frequently, and the only thing which bugs me is I have to go to the opposite end of the taskbar to shut Windows down depending on which PC I'm using.

well I wouldn't say threw it down the stairs, but yeah pretty much. It was very much a toys out the pram moment, and a tear in my eye

but seriously, windows 7 is nearly five years old and I try and move with the times. Gave Windows 8 a good chance as used the beta for a while, wrote some articles on technet blah blah blah.....but in the end, I just wanted a desktop operating system written for a desktop.

Have to say, other than a major dent to the finances, i'm loving the mac

Fair enough and I can fully understand the feeling of wanting to try something different or just have something new.

Windows 7 is 5 years old but I don't think it shows its age at all though. I mean, the UI elements, Aero and so on are still modern looking unlike Windows Vista which has that colourful vibrancy to it and the performance is still great on a modern system so if it works well still then I'd never even consider upgrading it until absolutely necessary :p

i tried , (very hard) to like windows 8 but i hate it ....

back to windows 7, best thing MS ever did was windows 7

Thanks for the suggestions. I've managed to sort out a workaround for now but it's not ideal. This college software is ancient, I honestly can't believe they get away with it - it's a fairly reputable one too. It runs perfectly on Win7, but I can only downgrade IE so far on Win8.

I'll give that Startisback a go, thanks for the heads up.

Gay: I'm not using XP and haven't in ages.

Andshrew: I see your point, but given that this is a college, and the fact that we're over a decade away from Server 2003, I'd have thought that it would've been a bit more up to date.
