Death of the PC - The Gadget Show

The PC will always have a place. For the last 5 years I've been hearing how the PC is dead and how everyone will be using laptops and tablets.

It must be in decline surely? Certainly not dead but fewer and fewer people I know have desktop set ups.

Unless people game or photo edit the people I know either use tablets or laptops. Which is a good thing because I get far less calls for help

There are some interesting misconceptions out there, everyone has a Mac, everyone has an iPad, everyone has a Samsung, know one uses Windows phone etc. In reality, it is all BS, but there is a slither of truth behind them, just like the idea of desktops going away this year.

Apart from gamers, when was the last desktop PC you fixed?

Desktop computers, well maybe. Enthusiast computers like the majority of ours, i very much doubt it.

Desktop/workstation computers are still in the majority when it comes to work, far more robust, and easy to fix.

Sales are down to longer replacement windows getting closer to 5 years rather than 3 year for businesses, due to the recession and that existing ones are still fast enough to run the latest programmes.

Tablets and even smartphones are still recent developments, they have a much faster replacement cycle. And I suspect at the bottom end of the market a lot of cheap tablets will be lucky to have 2 years of useful life.

Given laptops are more of a pain to repair and upgrade I would expect the average user also replaces these faster than desktops. Certainly I can say that's true based on my work colleagues, most have laptops and end up replacing them every 2-4 years. The ones that have desktops (normally in addition to a laptop) seem to keep them longer.

Last time I watched the Gadget show they were playing with remote controlled cars in garden centres and dropping phones down the toilet. It's brain dead entertainment so I'm not surprised something like this was said. Yes, the PC has declined in usage (or died if you like) for the average Joe but that doesn't mean it's had it, far from it.

I use to watch Click a lot too but I just find it a bit boring now so haven't watch it in quite a while. It just seems to be all about phones, tablets, appz for cool kids and anything Internet related now which gets a bit boring to watch.

21st Feb episode the gadget show failed completely for me with a review of the Personal Computer..

Now I do realise the Gadget Show is in no way for the enthusiasts as it is for the consumers but making such a claim as the desktop being obselete is just plain ignorant and they havent got a clue!..

They've been making the same argument for at least a year now, I can remember calling the "death of the PC" before

To be fair they have a point, the programme is aimed at the average consumer and for them its all about tablets and smartphones now. Enthusiasts and self builders like us are a minority. For most people its just a beige box in the corner that they no more understand or would dream of taking apart than a TV set.

For me, the future for most people is a phone or tablet which can be docked and connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. They house, or will soon house, enough power for everyday office tasks, and having additional PCs is a massive waste of space and electricity.

For anyone requiring more power, the PC is obviously not dead (be that for graphic design, gaming, data, etc), but for the everyday office user I can see them becoming pretty much needless.

I'm kinda sitting on the fence with this one. I went halfway between a tablet and a desktop, known as an "all-in-one" as my new PC for last year. i5-3470T, 6GB, 1TB, HD7850M with 1GB dedicated.

I use desktop mode mostly though, but it's great playing touch games on a 27" 10-way touch The chrome base makes the machine bottom-heavy as well, as to not knock it over when playing on it.

LOL, I live on the edge of an average town Plus, it was free upfront off the NHS "Let's Connect" scheme. It goes out of my salary and it's tax efficient. Don't think I'm breaking the competitor's rule here as it's for NHS employees only, but you were implying that you were after an explanation.
