Death of the PC - The Gadget Show

dirty casual :p
of course they are dead for people like you but in most other applications outside of the home their are no real alternatives so the desktop isn't going anyway.

steambox will likely make the pc popular again if it takes off :P

Yeah I just don't have the inclination to play Pc games anymore like I did. Think it's because I like complex ones and ones like command and conquer that have been killed off

Obviously in work is different. Although again we all have laptops with docking stations

my last job used laptops. 3d modelling for retail. Able to hotwap, move about etc, but they were crazy powerful laptops and had to be plugged in, ran 3 monitors etc. Makes more sense than having a huge tower under every desk tbh

still used roper towers for render/servers though.

that samsung aio looks scarily similar to my sammy tv i use as a monitor, would look amazing sat next to it. hmmmmmm

I work for a large engineering project, and all the CAD, BIM and even the graphics guys all use desktop PCs with multiple screens - why use a more expensive potentially less powerful laptop? The desktop is more easily upgradable and IMO favours that sort of work.

Having to buy docking stations for every employee and a laptop and multiple screen setups for laptops seems to be a little daft when you've got all the alternatives already available to you.

My surface pro has allowed me to do a lot more computing on a tablet, it is (relatively) powerful it can run any office software and I think many people will switch to that sort of solution with a dock. For many the next evolution of that sort of solution will be enough. I am in the minority and also have a couple of desk tops and all in one and a gaming laptop because I am a massive geek.

I didn't watch it and it was probably typical lazy journalism, i-knob fodder.

We were given lolpads at work. I have numbers and pages installed on it - it's frankly ****. I hate using it for anything other than replying to emails, browsing the web and playing games. Being productive with it is impossible and difficult.

I much rather have a laptop than an ipad for work.

I had a go on a surface (the full blown one) and I have to say that would be better than my ipad as you can actually use it like a laptop.

However, although I use a laptop at home (I haven't got the space for a desktop PC) I would go back to a desktop PC without a blink of an eye.

While it might be true that for an average home users a PC is a thing of the past (laptop is enough), however I do not see anything changing when it comes to business/professional use for a very long time.

While a PC/laptop in theory is the same thing just different shape tablets/mobile phones will never give you the same level of freedom and multitasking that a proper computer can.

Wholeheartedly agree.

Look at the BBC's most read article today ( an article from 2011)..... is that a result of this thread!!??

For most people a PC is obselete. The majority of people probably only browse websites, social media and email... all of which can be done more conveniantly on their phone/tablet.

can be done but not more conveniently.

This, for their intended market it is obsolete and massively on the decline. Even in the business sector desktops are taking a dive. that's not to say they are dead as there will likely always be a use for them in some circumstances. But their market is dropping and will continue to drop for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't want to go back to a pc(and unless games are released that require it, I won't. I connect laptop to a 24" screen & k&m if the heed/game arises). They're horrible as you have no choice but to sit at a desk. this is why so many home users and companies have replaced them with laptops. they aren't wasted money sat at a fixed point unable to be used most of the day.

Work is also laptops for office staff with docks, and tablets for mobile workers. Desktops about one per office for anyone to jump on. And take about 10mims to do anything. as they won't upgrade them.

I keep buying tablets thinking i want one but just end up selling them as my PC simply does everything a million times faster and better than any mobile device. Yes, tablets, laptops are great if you are on the move all the time and have a job where you are always travelling/on the train e.t.c but i drive to work and back each day and dont do any travelling for my job so i find it pretty pointless (apart from holidays).

it makes no sense to have laptop/tablet over a proper desktop pc at work.

Err, ive got a docking station at work to hook in to dual monitors, plus having a laptop means i can work anywhere, or if the laptop dies i can remote in on any machine and rdp to my dev vm.

Laptops do have a place in the office.

PCs arent dead as a laptop is a 'personal computer'. Heck you could even say a tablet or a smartphone is a pc. Generic statement is generic.

This is what we have
Mostly people have 1 monitor but many of us have 2 of needed

Next round of upgrades is April

It wouldn't surprise me if sales of traditional home desktop PCs were declining but I'd wager it's more to do with the longevity of a desktop and the changes in technology and the way people use it than people not wanting/needing a desktop PC.

I use my desktop PC for games and photo/video editing. Both are things that I've had much less time for since I became a father. For everyday things then I generally use my smartphone or tablet when out and about, or checking something quickly; and my laptop (Chromebook) when relaxing in the evening to browse the internet.

We moved 6 weeks ago and my desktop PC is still in its box waiting to be put back together. Although this is more to do with trying to organise all our stuff (our spare room/office is currently stacked with stuff which we can't put away until I build the new furniture we had delivered this week) than not wanting to have it up and running.

In terms of the office, we're currently in the process of switching to laptops as part of our 'agile working' drive. I've actually had a laptop at work for about four years as I've been fairly mobile around our sites, but my main desk has a dual monitor with keyboard and mouse setup so that I can actually be productive.

Death of the PC? Not a chance!

Change in how people use technology? Definitely!

When did a laptop diverge from being a "Personal Computer"? Same for a tablet really.

A tablet is a "Personal Computer". It has a screen, input controls, sound, storage, etc etc. How is different to a "Personal Computer"?

A desktop is also a "Personal Computer"...

I don't understand this argument, the PC is not dying its increasing massively.

Couldn't even modern TVs be classed as "Personal Computers" nowadays?

Totally agree, I hate making websites on a laptop as opposed to my dual screen desktop at work.

But your average joe at home who uses Facebook/emails a laptop would probably suffice. Plus of which the space savings with a laptop.

The Alienware laptop they showed was £2k which would cost nowhere near that for a PC.

I have a dual screen setup at work - using a laptop and docking station :o

I don't see any need for your typical home user to have a desktop PC these days, as laptops are great and tablets are only getting better. But for those of us who rely on a fast PC for their job and use it for entertainment at home, I can't see there being any other option for a long time.

A good PC just seems to do everything better, without having to rely on stupid "apps" all the time as well.

For example i have my PS3 hooked up to my TV and thought it would be easier to use that to watch something on blinkbox....but no, the blinkbox app is a pile of turd and it just didnt work. Also, the ps3 is so painfully slow at loading everything that i just get frustrated with it. Two minutes latter, switched my PC's output to the telly grabbed my wireless mouse and watched the film quickly and painlessly.

I think the trouble is most people havent experienced a fast high spec PC with a SSD installed. It is just so much quicker and more productive to use than any console, phone or tablet.
