Hi,

I've just installed a MSI 780ti gaming edition

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-241-MS&tool=3

At idle I can't hear it, and up to 200 Frames is quite but in cut scenes and loading screens when the FPS reach 200+ it starts making a high pitched squealing noise, and the higher the FPS is, the high the pitch goes.

I've googled it and it sounds like coil whine.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a one off and I Should RMA it for a new one? I cant cope with it making the noise at 1000+ it starts making my ears ring.

Sounds like it will be coil whine you can live with it or send back
Possible fix before you send it back is to loop a benchmark like heaven for awhile and see if it goes away with use

If you're using one cable with two plugs to power the card from your PSU, you can try using two separate cables from the PSU to the card. Some people report this as fixing the problem. Either it gives you two separate rails, or two different pickups from the same rail.

Or try a looping benchmark to try to wear in the vibrating coil. Heaven or Valley seem to be the favourites.

Ok Thanks, I'll try one of those benchmarks to see if it goes. It already has 2 power cables, so if the benchmark doesn't wear it in i'll RMA. Don't think I can live with it :(

Thanks for your help guys :)

They all do it. Advise you don't waste your time sending it back.

^^ This ! I have 2x MSI GTX 780 reference, 1x MSI GTX 780 TwinFrozr Gaming OC, 1x Palit GTX 780 Super Jetstream, 1x Asus GTX 780 DirectCU II OC, 1x Inno3D GTX 780 IChiLL HerculeZ X3 Ultra DHS, 1x EVGA GTX 780 SuperClocked.
Only the Palit card is 100% coilwhine free. All the others coilwhine at different noise levels. The Inno3D in particular was loud, but I made it loop Heaven 4.0 for the night, and in the morning the coilwhine was much less.
These days it seems like low capacity VRM are causing the coilwhine on almost every GK110 card out there.

Most coil whine will settle after a short time, if its really bad you can RMA it but chances are you will get another one just like it, and 200FPS, how old is the game your playing, regardless of FPS, its when under load it will make the most noise but it should lessen given time

If the worst comes to the worst, you can always enable v-sync or enable a frame limiter if the game has one. I don't get any whine on my MSI 290 until I get to hundreds of FPS, and it's only loud at a couple of thousand FPS.

It's combination of the card components, framerate, and PSU, to hit just the wrong frequency to make the coil vibrate. You can often change one of those things and avoid the coil whine.
