London set to ban older cars.

diesels prior to 2014? that's gunna be like everyone in london with the increasing numbers in people buying little diesels....

not to sure on the size of "central london" but surely this is really unfair to lots who will have these cars?! "sorry you're not allowed that car anymore.... sell it and buy a brand spanking new one"

though I did skim read and did I read this would take effect in 2020? if so.... probably be forgotten about by then xD or we'll all be in our hybrid P1s or 918s ;)

Pointless regulation. We've lived without it for a hundred years, time would deal with this naturally. There are so many impracticalities and misalignments with previous rules and 'incentives' that it isn't feasible.

Seems good to me, I work in central London so mostly walk around and use PT, hardly ever drive so less horrible diesel tat, the better!

But by the time they get this implemented most pre 2014 diesel will be in the scrappies.

It will be stupidly implemented, but I do kinda agree with the principle of it. I see some proper bangers about that are belching out black smoke. If it can be seen then the emissions must be pretty bad!

Out of interest I just looked up my car. It's a 2004 petrol, and definitely doesn't chuck out black smoke!
Official figures for it are:
  • CO2 emissions 194 g/km
  • Carbon Monoxide 0.559 g/km
  • HC Emissions 0.122 g/km
  • NOx Emissions 0.037 g/km
So that easily meets Euro4/5 for CO and NOx, but the Hydrocarbons just pushes it out and into Euro3. The Euro 4 limit for HC is 0.100, whereas Euro 3 allows 0.200.

Even then though surely it's just what the car was when it left the factory, on the EU's silly course that all the manufacturers have learnt how to cheat.
It would be better with a more accurate test.. but that's still when the car was new. To factor in how the car has worn (and been maintained etc) what about using the MOT emissions recorded for that exact car the last time it was MOT'd?

It is tested in the mot and would fail. Against the standards when the car was made.

Good plan. Lets scrap a load of perfectly serviceable older cars, and instead pump a load of **** into the atmosphere by building new ones with marginally lower emissions.*

*Some or all of this post may be sarcastic.

This really. "Natural Wastage" will deal with the "problem" in time and any older vehicles that are still kept in use will be so insignificant in number (And, indeed, usage) as to not really be an issue!

In any case, the biggest reduction in emissions was during the 90's with the introduction of cats, as far as further reductions are concerned we are well into diminishing returns territory now, and have been so for some time!

Silly rule imho.

Will they replace the heaps of old taxi's in London too then ? And smelly buses replaced by hydrogen or electric buses ?

^ Both black cabs and PCO cars now have to meet certain requirements. Old cabs are gone, an donly old minicabs around are ones with existing licences that havent expired.

The government really are determined to force people into buying new cars aren't they?

They just wanna keep the 'upper class' areas 'upper class', by forcing the lower orders and their tatty bangers off from the roads. Central London is full of obnoxious stuck up twits anyway.
