86th Annual Academy Awards

why ? i enjoyed leo in it was it a amazing performance you'll never forget ? = nope just another leo performance. good not outstanding.

i think hes a bit too clean to be honest.

I saw Blue Jasmine a few months ago (great film) and Cate Blanchetts performance was incredible, so well deserved on the Oscar.

In her opening monologue, ceremony host Ellen DeGeneres addressed the central battle between mavity and 12 Years a Slave. There were two possibilities for the evening, she said – "That 12 Years a Slave wins the best picture Oscar. And possibility two: you're all racists."

i thought that when she said it, its gonna win because its about what it is.

How can a film like Dallas buyers club not win when they say best actor and best supporting but... no. I mean the 2 most important roles in the film yet, no win.

Im new to the oscars but it does seem like a lot of political BS and egg shell treading.

Good to see Her winning best original screenplay, thought that was really good.

Also, not fussed about the Sky adverts for mavity on SkyStore. It's probably because they have a promotion at the moment where they will credit you for one SkyStore purchase up to £5~ as part of an Oscars promotion.

Because best performance doesn't always equal best film? There are so many Oscar categories because films are about so much more than just the cast.

i guess that's the difference between the uneducated general public watching a film for "what it is" and the inner circle jerk side.

Which recognized movie awards are given by popularity alone so i can check them out ?

thanks

As much as i agree with above, I must admit I consider 12 Years A Slave as a relatively poorly made movie, winning Oscar purely because of topic rather than cinematic treatment of said topic.

I literally have no idea what you're trying to get at here.

When you say award given by popularity do you mean critically or publicly? Because if it's the former then the Oscars/Golden Globes are your best bet, if it's the latter then I would suggest the MTV Movie Awards. No prizes for guessing which of those two categories sees genuinely terrible films getting awards but maybe that appeals to you more.

Using popularity as a measure of how good a film is is fraught with danger...

I'm yet to see 12 Years A Slave so I wasn't commenting specifically on it but there's no doubt the subject matter helped its award prospects.

MTV ok ty will read up on them.

ill see whats voted then see how terrible they are

ta again

I've seen 12 years a slave
Wolf on Wallstreet
American Hustle
mavity
Captain Philips

Will watch Dallas Buyers Club and Nebraska later this week.

From the ones that i've seen, Best Picture should go to mavity. 12 years a slave (I gave it 8/10 on the day I saw it) tackles the subject matters direct head on, but there are quite a lot of flaws.

Some scene dragged, pointlessly. I don't mean the torture scenes being too graphic, or the hanging scene where he was left there for hours. But there are some other ones where the screen shows nothing but the characters starring in to the void, for too long. I remember 5 mins after he was turned into a slave I was looking at my watch. I normally judge how much a movie grabs and hold my attention by how many times I look at my watch. The more I look meaning the less attention it has on me. I think I was checking my watch every 15 mins or so with this.

I can see why the academy voted it though, they always like movies like these. As again they like actors who step out of their comfort zones and lose a ton of weight for a part - see Tom Hanks in Philedelphia. So Matthew McConaughey was a foregone conclusion.

I agree that Best Director going to mavity, that movie, for something that nothing really much happen, manage to hold your attention for every minute is impressive.

I really agree the intense, to some uncomfortable, scenes were offset by over length fairly boring ones. I never got any sense of time from the movie either.. 12 years literally seemed "2 hours a slave."

Think the awards was generally poor quality this year. The films didn't really stand out for me and I agree that the topic of 12 years a slave helped it's prospects no end.

Some bizarre snubs as well, in particularly not even a nomination for Idris Elba. Even Hanks was worth one for Captain Phillips.
