I hate the DVLA

I've received one of those letters last year, accusing me of not notifying them of a sale of a bike. I sent a very strongly worded letter back stating I had sent it, and that I was not going to pay any fine due to their inefficiency.
They never even replied but I've heard nothing for well over a year.

You billed them for the letter I hope?

Didn't they go through a phase of "losing" people driving licence records and requiring them to do their test all over again?

It's a shame that "**** off, your problem, not mine" isn't valid. DVLA aren't going to learn when their mess-ups have little consequence.

Yes, I believe that they did. In fact I know of one lady who appears to have been affected, about 5 years or so ago. It was shortly before I passed my test and spurred me to keep my copy of the test certificates just in case.

That's because you did what you had to, just not realising it.

All you have to do is send them a signed letter, stating you sold it and they request you include as much detail about the buyer. But really all you need to do is say you sold it in ~what ever month.

They are pretty incompetent :( they incorrectly added catagories onto my license I didn't actually have a license for (D1E, etc.) then when it came to renewing the photo part that caused all kinds of problems as they refused to renew it with those catagories and apparently "couldn't" remove them from the license and wanted me to take the relevant tests and so on - of which atleast one of them I couldn't actually take anyhow as I didn't meet the other requirements.

They sent me a court summons 13 months after sending them an identical letter. They are such an inefficient organisation.

I wish i knew this. i paid £60 for failure to notify when i sold my volvo years ago. I had to send a letter with the month of sale etc.

on the phone i was told that if i hadn't received the confirmation of sale i was still responsible for following up

Sounds like I had a nice operator, as it was dvla who told me this. I just sent a letter off to them saying sold in xxxxx and never heard anything else.

Didn't this subject feature on an episode of Watchdog? Seem to remember the grimacing women giving some portly guy from the DVLA a hard time.

I try to renewal driving license photocard which mine is expiry soon. But, online renewal driving license photocard is rather annoyed  because it say you must have valid uk passport as I already got a valid passport until 2024. But I rang up DVLA to addressed this problem of why is rejected me because my passport not valid. (rubbish as I do have valid uk passport until 2024 with the same name, address, date of birth, place of birth with my last DVLA photocard ten years ago) The person say to me on the phone, your passport details are slightly difference to your driving license details. U need to claim a new form off the post office D1 with new photo but that's will cost more money.

Big mess up by DVLA. And finally why is DVLA are conned us with more renewal cost fee!

And even if you keep copies of them they will not accept any record other than there own, as documents can be forged.

Here is a great example that happened to a very good friend of mine when I was in the RAF.

He was sent on detachment to work at the Fairford air show and as usual had to take both his civilian driving license and RAF driving permits with him so he could drive there vehicles etc.

Anyway two weeks later he comes back and when unpacking notices that he has lost his license, no biggy thinks he and applies to DVLA for a replacement.

3-4 weeks later he receives his new license and straight away he sees he has no car entitlement on it  he gets straight on the phone to DVLA and gets told that his license is correct and that they have no record of him ever having passed a car test just a motorcycle one. He then informs them that he has a photocopy of his license that clearly shows a car entitlement we dont care that could be faked is there reply. Even when he explains that he has been driving for over 20years both civilian and military vehicles they dont care.

He then contacts our Motor Transport section who keep records of all driving licenses etc and gets a certified copy from them, DVLA state they wont accept it as it could be faked.

The only good thing was that he could still drive at work as on base they are classed as private roads so he could still drive military vehicles.

He even took legal advice about it but in the end he was left with absolutely no option but to take the theory test and driving test again.

Now jump on a few months and his car insurance is up for renewal and this time they asked for a photocopy of his license imagine his surprise when his quote jumps from £250 a year full comp to close to £1K as he is now classed as a new driver and therefore high risk.........

Pretty shoddy legal advice if he had certified copies of the original license

Yeah I would be fighting tooth n nail to get that licence back!

They spent months fighting it and in the end got nowhere just how much do you throw to a legal team, eventually you will go bankrupt especially trying to take on the DVLA.

I take photos of items (with the tracking number too) I send via the post office, so I've got records of them if I ever need them.

As I said above even if you have photocopies or photos of them they will not accept them as they could be tampered with to show entitlements you dont have.

^^ Doesn't surprise me at all - see my previous post... fortunately somehow the extra categories on mine got moved to provisional status at some random point recently so its not a problem for me any more...

I mean so that I have a reference of the tracking number, as that's the problem the OP had, they couldn't prove that they had sent it because they lost the receipt.
