86th Annual Academy Awards

In her opening monologue, ceremony host Ellen DeGeneres addressed the central battle between mavity and 12 Years a Slave. There were two possibilities for the evening, she said – "That 12 Years a Slave wins the best picture Oscar. And possibility two: you're all racists."

i thought that when she said it, its gonna win because its about what it is.

How can a film like Dallas buyers club not win when they say best actor and best supporting but... no. I mean the 2 most important roles in the film yet, no win.

Im new to the oscars but it does seem like a lot of political BS and egg shell treading.

Like American Hustle (which I hated and didn't win anything obvious, ha), I think DBC has good acting performances that hold up an otherwise average film.

Also chalk up another one for being pleased with Her winning best original screenplay.

I really agree the intense, to some uncomfortable, scenes were offset by over length fairly boring ones. I never got any sense of time from the movie either.. 12 years literally seemed "2 hours a slave."

Oh yeah, I didn't notice his hair didn't really gone grey until the last scene. He lost no weight at all doing all those hard labour and always seem very clean shaven.

Bit of a mixed bag all in all I thought.

Cate Blanchett was a certainty I thought.

Matthew McConaughey, i thought he would win, even though I was hoping it would go to Leonardo DiCaprio. I cant think of a more consistently great actor. He should have had a couple of ocars by now.

Jared Leto was very good but I thought Michael Fassbender was a stronger performance.

The best film. Now I have watched all the nominees and I the only ones that really stood out for me were Wolf of Wallstreet, Captain Philips (Tom Hanks being amazing) and the single movie highlight of the year for me being mavity. Now ive watched it since on the small screen and its not as good as the other 2 I mentioned. But I saw it on a IMAX screen and the experience was nothing short of amazing. It really is a unique bit of cimema when viewed this way. And something that ive never sene the likes of before. Thats why I think it should have won.

Very tired after long day at Uni after staying up all night to watch the Oscars and then reading some of Byron's work and rewatching mavity (D. Alfonso Cuarón, 2013) in 3D :p.

Because best performance doesn't always equal best film? There are so many Oscar categories because films are about so much more than just the cast.

This. There are many, many different aspects to films, some do things 'better' than others and some bring them together in a special way.

12 Years A Slave (D. Steve McQueen, 2013) is a fantastic film, worthy winner. Great Beauty (D. Paolo Sorrentino, 2014) getting best foreign film too, cracking. I actually thought for a change almost, that the Academy Awards got pretty much everything 'right' (in my humble opinion) this year with the exception of The Act of Killing (D. Joshua Oppenheimer , 2013) which did not win the Oscar for best documentary film that is (in my opinion) should have :(.

Pleased for Lupita Nyong'o :D, Matthew McConaughey who has topped off the McConaissance with aplomb :).

I thought Ellen was fabulous as well, after last years abject Seth MacFarlane.

<3 Emma Watson :o.

I can see why the academy voted it though, they always like movies like these. As again they like actors who step out of their comfort zones and lose a ton of weight for a part - see Tom Hanks in Philedelphia. So Matthew McConaughey was a foregone conclusion.
.

why diddnt Christian Bale win an award when he lost a tone more weight then McConaughey and THEN bulked up immediatly for the first batman movie?

McConaughey has stepped up big time but Leo for me has been consistant and has put in many oscar winning performances throughout his whole career playing lots of different characters and always starring in top top movies.

I cannot understand why he never won. he played the part to perfection in his latest role if you read the full true story of the man he played .

Such a shame he did not win. What must he do to win a damm award?

When Denzel Washington won an award he did not really step out of his comfort zone. infact he has performed much better in other films before training day so i cant quite understand how they rate actors in the oscars

I think DiCaprio is a bit like Scorsese in that the Academy seem to think he'll get an Oscar one day so overlook him in favour of people who are less consistent but pull out one amazing performance that year. Like Scorsese, he will probably get an Oscar for a less heralded film later in his career when he looks to be running out of time to win one.

DiCaprio must be left wondering what he has to do to get an Oscar by now.

Maybe if he stars in an outer space CGI epic about space-faring slavers he would be in with a chance?

I knew Leo would not get the oscar, same with wolf of wall street. I didn't bother wasting my time with the Oscars again. I dont know what Scorcese has to do to get an Oscar i really dont.

Leo in Shutter Island was fantastic as well, the film or him did not get a nomination either i just cant understand some of the decisions they make.

I remember the The Dark Knight wasn't even nominated for best picture in 2008 which is one of the best movies of the last 10 years easily.

Goodfellas probably my favourite ever movie deserved the Oscar and lost out to dancing with wolves.

Danzel Washington in Training Day is one of the only one's where i was surprised it won, he was unbelievable in that movie and for once the person/film who i wanted to win won.

Mickey Rourke getting snubbed for The Wrestler was a huge let down for me as well thought he definitely deserved it that year. Sean Penn only won the award over him imo because he played a gay character.

I was expecting 12 years a slave to milk the oscars this year as well just because it was a bout a slave.

I dont agree with most of the decisions that they make so i dont bother watching it any more because i simply dont agree with most of the awards given out for best picture/actor.

I have to agree with some of this although I won't break it down. It seems that if you play someone relatively normal you've got no chance. You need to either play someone disabled, dying, physically unwell or just be a film with lots of LBGT/Black people in it to win best picture. It seems that it's all about ticking the 'not biased, not an industry still overwhelmingly controlled by old Jewish guys, include minorities' box.

Leo does great performances but you still see him in it.

Watch Monsters and you see Charlize Theron like you never see her before.
Watch Daniel Day Lewis in any of his wins, you see the character, not the actor.

When Leo plays a part, it reminds me of other roles he plays, there is a constant trait that he can't shake. You watch him and you say, he's good but he plays it exactly how you expected him to play before you step into through the door.

I think you have a point there Raymond, as much as I like DiCaprio.

This stuff about best picture being dominated by "issues" films or actors from "minority" groups is a load of crap frankly. Just look at the recent winners! Slumdog Millionaire and Crash are the only films that spring to mind with non-white actors in the lead roles and neither film has a particular axe to grind.

Your opinion is not just novice or uneducated but wholly uninformed.

You mean the Machinist?

That movies is perhaps a bit too left field for the academy and although he was great in it, there wasn't that push or even momentum for him. Oscars are more than performances, let's talk about that for a second, Miramax is great with this, their films when nominated wins over some arguably stronger movies. Think
Shakespeare in love over Saving Private Ryan. So who the backers are plays a part.

Second, comedy rarely wins. You want gritty, biopic or roles where you've never imagined that actor could ever play. Sure he's played some pretty big biopic roles but I don't see the character, I see Leo.

Leo looks the same he did in Wolf on Wallstreet as he was in the aviator, at least when the character is on the up. Leo looks the same as he did when he was in catch me as you can in wolf of Wallstreet in a few scenes, like when he first started to become a stock broker. He laughs the same way, he screams the same way, he shouts the same way.

It's not like he isn't into his role, I see him, I don't see the character he is portraying.

Look at Daniel Day Lewis, he feels like he is Lincoln. Look at Kevin Spacey in American Beauty, he is that suburban middle age man. Kathy Bates in Misery is that crazy woman and even Juliet Roberts managed to play a sassy single mum, away from her romantic comedies that she's been doing.

Leo is a movie star, that's his reputation, his time to win an oscar will come, but I feel like he need to put himself through hell on screen before he gets that statute.
