On my pc I have a vast collection of movies, most are mine but some are for the family. Previously I have put them on a memory stick and used the media app on the TV to play them. However the Samsung tv has a limit on length of videos of about 2 hours I believe so it is not ideal. What is the easiest way to watch these movies on my TV? I've tried streaming from pc to Xbox (media centre) But often my internet speeds cannot cope (downsides to living in the country). Also some movie file types do not work over usb on the Xbox. Looking for a very cheap solution preferably free. Thanks!

think your gonna be limited if you have poor internet speeds

best way would be to buy a usb 1tb or 2tb hdd and put all your films onto that

or buy a hdd dock and plug your external hdd into it and plug the usb end into the tv

best streaming way from pc to tv is to use tversity software

Do you have a laptop? Just whack in a HDMI cable/VGA cable to the TV when you want to watch a film?

Why would your internet speeds matter streaming from your PC to your Xbox in the same house anyway, are they connected via Wifi or cabled?

OP best thing to do is run some Cat5/6 cable from your pc to your router and then another cable to something like a Raspberry PI with xbmc or a small HTPC thats connected to your tv via HDMI

EDIT: if you cant run a cable try using some powerline adapters

If hes stuck to using Wifi using something like PS3 media server on his PC and streaming to the Xbox would have been my suggestion, I always found the media center app on the xbox to be ropey at best, either that or get a set of homeplugs (beaten to it by Nick above, aint got a clue what homeplugs are I meant Powerlines lol) to improve his speed between the two if a cabled connection isn't possible.

some TV's have internet port, mine does im sure you could send films that way without the need of a htpc

I thought i was wrong about internet speeds but not sure, however I am limited to wifi and it is a barn conversion with really thick walls, obviously my problem. I may be able to run ethernet cable but as mentioned the Xbox media player is ropey at best. I will look into something like a raspberry Pi

Raspberry pi with XBMC on it and a nice big external HDD plugged in will work nicely, you'd just need to unplug it and copy your new films over every so often.

I was going to say run an HDMI cable from your PC to TV, but I guess they're pretty far away from eachother.

Yeah, a good distance between pc and TV. Raspberry Pi looks like a good option and its always nice to have something else to play with :p
