Would like to purchase some cheap red wine from Sainsbury or Tesco but I really want to get something that doesn’t stain and at least taste good.

Preferably not too expensive either.

Any ideas?

Stain what?

I'm not a cheap wine fan but you can get some reasonable results with a Rioja or Merlot. I rarely tend to go less than £6 a bottle these days.

Stain teeth and tongue. I once remember having some red wine at a bar once went to the toilet, looked in the mirror and saw my mouth was a purple mess!!

Possible date on the cards and she wants red wine, but don’t want any 'accidents' happening!

All red wine will stain to some degree, but a light red like a Pinot Noir will have a less pronounced effect. Try avoiding your lips when drinking, and brush your teeth when the bottle's finished. Although if you manage to finish the bottle, it's probably not been a great date.. ;)

If you're looking for cheap wine, I'd steer clear of something like a Pinot Noir. It's not a cheap wine generally and if go looking for a cheap one it'll probably be pretty grim.

As Boxman said, something like a Rioja is a good bet for a cheap and cheerful wine, but it really depends on your preference.

Also it's a bit cliché to mention it, but if you go for a bottle of £5 wine then when you've taken out all of the costs of getting it from vine to shelf the actual wine is worth pence. If you can push to the £8-9 region you start getting some nice wines, even in a supermarket. Avoid the x% off deals though - they're a con.

Yeah finding a red wine thats decent and doesn't stain to some degree will be pretty hard.

I'm a big fan of Barossa Valley and similiar region wines myself, quite partial to a shiraz or cabernet sauvignon from the likes of Jacob's Creek, Banrock Station or Wolf Blass - not too cheap and not too expensive.

recommended on BBC's food and drink with that Le Roux chap. The wine woman recommends decanting into a jug or something similar about an hour beforehand to really smooth it out but I have definitely gone back a few times to this bottle . Very drinkable

I tried this after watching Food & Drink, very nice wine.

If you can find it then Mcguigan Black Label shiraz is prob the best drinkable red I've ever had, you can find it sometimes in Morrisons.

I do like Waitrose's wine, I think they do actually taste it rather than bring it in in containers then bottle it over here.

Preferably not too expensive either.

Not sure you'll be getting fantastic quality of either if you're not prepared to spend closer to £10.

Will try and find a Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais as someone else suggested.

Another choice would be Bordeaux if you're looking at either of the two above (Bordeaux, my personal favourite region as well as Alsace for white) but again I wouldn't expect much for under a tenner.

Tried a Chilean Pinot Noir the other day, have to get the details as it was from a sommelier but it was ~£10 a bottle and was absolutely sublime.

Waitrose do some nice wine for the £6-9 range, often their offers are quite drinkable and they often have a Bordeaux on offer for around £7 from £13 which is lovely.

I don't often do cheap red, but I find the house red in sainsburys isn't too bad (from a box).

If I'm putting out cheap plonk for a party or something I tend to brew it, a decent brewing kit for 20 or so litres of good red is only about £40, depends how much effort you wish to put in though.

Will you be cooking? If so, let the regulars know what as that may influence their recommendations. Good luck with the date :)

Yes yes, cooking makes all the difference! If you're cooking, step 1 is always pour a glass of chef juice (wine).

Or alternatively, open the bottle and take a big old swig, repeat every so often.

The waitrose own-brand Italian Red is excellent for a fiver.

I also recommend Lindemann's - they're very cheap and available everywhere, and a lot better than your terrible Gallo or Jacob's Creek rubbish.
