New motherboard same windows 8.1

Windows 8 handles a motherboard swap quite well from what I have read. I personally prefer a clean install.

However, I might just try a swap myself as I have a new, different chipset mobo arriving soon and run 8.1

Feeling lazy :D

I went from a FX6300 to 4670k, so processor and motherboard and it did it ok, although I re-installed it anyway, just wondered if it worked and it did

Yeah I have backup anyway, think I will give it a try. How did Windows handle the product key? I have heard windows 8 links itself to the motherboard true?

I not even sure what version my key is I got it that time when students was getting it for £15 Windows 8 Pro is this OEM or ??
I ask because I think its OEM that links to the Motherboard.

Thanks guys

ive swapped boards just fine,no ill effects

some older chipsets require a re install though

you might have to re activate windows, use phone activation if it wont accept the code

I've done it once on Windows 7 but from an Intel chipset board to another Intel chipset board.

The safe route is to do this:
- Download all applicable drivers for your motherboard into a folder.
- Boot into safe mode.
- Remove/uninstall old drivers.
- Reboot and go back into safe mode.
- Install new drivers.
- Boot into normal Windows.

I came from a z68 AsRock Extreme 7 Gen 3 to an Asus Maximus V Gene. Swapped & booted in to Windows no issues, worked like a charm!

I changed motherboard and CPU recently in my HTPC and I didn't have to re-install Windows, I didn't even have to reactivate either.

Windows 8.1 to be specific, also don't be concerned about your £15 key, I've used mine on different machines due to forgetting which PC had the key originally.

you won't have to reinstall - just re-activate. 5 minute job - ring their number, give them the code on your screen and they will issue you a new one. No need to rebuild at all - Done it like 6 times lol

Enter it in to your system and that dude called bob becomes your uncle ;)
