I was all set to finalise my build with the MSI R280 Gaming card (~£245) but then happened to see a comment suggesting that A 770GTX might be better.

I'd be looking to keep to around that budget (£250), but which card would be best for me? My current build is:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Radeon R9 280X Gaming Edition OC 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £245.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £109.99
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 650W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G1600HC9DC01) £55.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter ** HDD £52.99
1 x Deepcool GAMMAXX S40 CPU-Cooler - 120mm £19.99
Total : £827.52 (includes shipping : £8.00).

I see that there are 3/4 770's at that price point, but I have no idea whether they would be better than the R280. Really want to sort this tonight so I can order with next day delivery for tomorrow, but keep seeing other stuff which confuses me (so I apologise for commenting in about 3 different threads)!

I'd say the 280X, has that 3gb of ram over the 2gb of the 770 and performance is minimal in both directions depending on what game

I assume you mean the AMD R9 280X rather than the R9 280 which was announced today?

Between the 280X and the 770 its a bit of swings and roundabouts performance wise, depending on factory overclock or of course end user overclocking, but at stock they are pretty much head to head. Yes the AMD has 3GB vs the Nvidia cards 2GB but to be honest by the time it becomes a factor neither will be powerful enough anyway.

Of course you can now expect the wrath of the red posse because I didn't say the red card is better

They're pretty equal, the 280X has possibly better future proofing with the extra VRAM, though I never ran out of VRAM on my 680 so not too sure about that.
Go with whichever is cheaper IMO.

They're pretty equal as everyone has said. I debated for a long time and went with the GTX 770 in the end. This is coming from a 6950. That MSI twin frozr cooler has issues with oil leakage and fans seizing up. I went with the cheapest card with decent warranty which was the GTX 770.

Afraid not. I was close to buying that MSI as well.

Upon reading this thread I’ve checked my GTX770 Gaming Edition; oil all over shroud and motherboard, but the fans are not rattling as yet.

Also asked my brother to check his GTX770 Gaming Edition bought around the same time; told me it's covered in oil & one fan rattling bad with anything over 50% fan speed.

Not impressed considering both cards are only 8 months into used life...

Here's mine :(

well i had 7950 witch was good card v.good , but had issues flickering on idle on 120 hz screen i think there was a solution but i to increase 2d clocks or something like that . but i got msi 770 gtx 4 gig oc gaming edition it is a dream tbh. it clocks crazy on memory i can do around 2050 on memory core is average clocked at 1267 core. also i got it for 280 something quid ,sold the games worked out bellow 250 £ . and 4 gig edition has back plate, also noticed like thief and few games using more then 2 gig so i would say more then 2 gig is essential , if you can get good 280 for low price its the same as 7970 and lower price then 4 gig 770 gtx i would say go for 280, also depends what games you play.

Bah, that sucks. Well, given that I've already pushed my budget up more than I'd like, I should perhaps drop back a gen and go for either an R9 270 or equivalent nVidia - in which case, what should I get instead?

Edit: I should add, go cheaper now with a view to upgrade in 12-18 months.

To be honest with nvidia when you drop below a 770 you are not really getting value for money brand new you would be better off going 2nd hand GTX 760 if you can.

There is the 750ti but I have read mixed reviews saying its worth it and then others saying waste of money.

A r9 270X would probably tide you over.

no point getting 760 when 670 faster , value for money is hard these days if you don't have 670 , 7950 or 7970 from before or few months or more back second hand .

780 , 290, 290x or 780ti crazy prices , might as well wait for next gen
