I'm thinking of doing the above as I have 2x290x's and have been informed by people on this forum that I'm not getting the best out of my 290x's, so the question is what will the gains be for doing this and is it worth it cost wise.

I went from the same chip to a 4770k BECAUSE i was planning on going Crossfire 290x.

TBH in almost all games you are heavily bottle necked on the 8350. Whether its worth the money is up to you, as it is your money that is being spent. IMO it is well wort it, but if all you play is BF4 on 1080p, you can argue your current set up is enough.

I saw some heavy bottlenecking with games like COD ghosts even with one card heavily overclocked, so i imagine you will see a fair improvement if you get a 4770k to deal with the two cards if you play COD ghosts. Bottlenecking is game dependent, though with your current set up, id imagine you are missing out on a fair bit of GPU performance in the vast majority of titles.

You will see massive gains in gaming performance, use less power, and the 4770K is a bargain at it's price point. Sell your FX 8350 and put the money towards the 4770K imho.

I would strongly query uses less power. With 2 x 290x and an overclocked (presumably) 4770K, the power taken at the wall will be similar within a few tens of watts to the 8350 with 2 x 290x. I have checked both processors at about 200-250W under load. Maybe 5% at most. Depends on the resolution as to whether there is still a CPU bottleneck. Would be interested to see the comparisons.

The difference is huge, over a hundred watts more..

@ stock the FX uses an extra 146watts

When both are overclocked the FX uses an extra 163watts

Performance VS price the 4770K is a monster, best gaming CPU. Sell the FX and put the money towards a 4770K, your R9 290's will thank you...

You'd arguably use less power with the FX setup, just because the CPU cannot push the GPUs as hard lol. Even though the FX uses a good 100w more, the power hungry part of the rig is CF290X.

I went from FX8350 to i7 4820K. Believe me the difference is HUGE.

Yes yes some will point to BF4 CPU benchmarks, or a handful of games that do support proper multicore CPU which seems FX8350 is OK. (even if bit lackster).
Or Mantle CPU benefits etc.

But is still a handful of games.

So if you can get a 4770K/4790K (Haswel refresh) get it. If you plan to stick to 2 way or later 3 way Crossfire, maybe consider a 4820K also.
And the MSI X79A-GD45 is an absolute beast when comes overclocking and great value for money.

That was not his point and I do not think you are getting it.

Please explain why my 8350 system at 4.7ghz with eight prime workers uses 250w seemingly less than bit tech at 4ghz. That graph has been around since the first release of piledriver and i doubt they optimised voltages etc.

Still more than the 4770 I agree but stick 600-700w on for the gfx and it pales to relative insignificance.

Agreed. This is a common misconception for people that do not understand power consumption and overclock their components. I am pretty sure broom has been told this before but oh well..

Getting a 4770K is a better solution however I would scratch my head as to why you got such top heavy GPU performance and paired it with the FX. Did you get into mining before looking at the games?

I am all for the 8320/50 when it can be used well but in such an imbalanced rig, i feel the 290x's are going to waste a bit with the current set up.

Selling the Sabertooth and the 8350 will get you a fair amount of cash for the upgrade too!

It's just a gradule upgrade, I got a good price for my 7990 so it got the 2 290x's with the intention of upgrading to intel.
With not knowing much on the intel side of things is haswell the best to go for or should I go for x79.

With X79 you have the possibility of adding a hex core chip later if desired, full dual x16 pcie, (though not a great deal faster than dual x8), it will also run cooler.

I see you have a haswell so you would recommend x79 over z87?
Dont get me wrong, hw is a pretty decent platform and good enough for dual card sli. The amount of heat they chuck out can be pretty high. Ive ran sli 670's in the rig in sig and will do again with the gtx 780. As for future upgrades though, aside from the upcoming 4970k, (bit pointless tbh) there isnt much of an upgrade on the 1150 platform.
