hi i have a panasonic g30,a update appeared on my screen the other day so i installed it but when i re started the tv i noticed that if i increase the shapness control in the tv settings the black texts when im browsing turn red,it goes bck to normal if if turm down the sharpness, the warranty has run out but i emailed panasonic support and wasnt happy with there reply they said that if i pay for a panasonic repair guy to come to my home.probaly cost a few hundred quid, they said that they might cover the cost of the repair depending on what he says,i told them i couildnt afford to pay to get him out and dont see why i have too when its there software update that has broken my tv as it was fine before i installed it,and that i noticed the problem staright away, thinkin of contacting my lawyer as surely they have to take full responsibility for what there software has done to my tv/dont they?

this is why I buy all TV's from John Lewis, free 5 year warranty with every set.

The simple solution is put sharpness down, it should be down anyway for HD inputs anyway.

Otherwise it's out of warranty and no they don't need to do anything, can you prove it was the update that has borked the TV?

If OP could argue that it broke before he believes it should have, and convince a judge then they have too. But otherwise he's ****ed.

If every owner of a Sky box took the same approach then Sky's lawyers would be tied up in court for the next 1000 years.

Firmware updates do cause very annoying glitches. Your TV isn't broken in the sense that some component has failed or the screen suddenly had half its pixel die; but I do sympathise that it has taken a backward step as a direct result of poorly written firmware.

The software engineers will compile a snagging list to address the issues. If it comes to light that they screwed the pooch and then enough people complain then it will light a fire under someone's arse to resolve the issue pronto. Your friend is publicity. Get yourself over to AV forums and see what other G30 owners are saying about this. Then if you find that there's a consensus that thing definitely aren't right, get on to WatchDog and WhatHiFi and You and Yours (BBC Radio 4) and raise a bit of a stink. No quality manufacturer likes having it's name associated with a major screw up. This will be far more effective than trying to lay the blame at John Lewis's door for something that's really outside their control and not their responsibility.

Over an update which has made some text turn red? I think that might be a bit OTT.

Do the above, see if anyone else has noticed an issue. Have you tried any troubleshooting yourself? E.g. reset the TV to factory settings etc? It might also be possible to roll back to an earlier update (although this tends not to be the case).

Point is, your energy would be better spent trying to find a way to fix the issue than talking to lawyers or taking them to court, especially seeing as your TV still works.

what if i took them to a small claims court,it might push them to do something
Look, you're not taking the hint. So it's time to be direct.

The idea of legal action over a firmware update is PISH

If you want to waste your time and get the laughed at then go ahead. But you're kicking off for the wrong reason. You're starting a pub brawl because someone looked at you funny. We've suggested a sensible course of action. Stop behaving like an arse.

The TV should be perfectly clear without any additional sharpening if you have matched the PC resolution to the screen's resolution correctly.

4 weeks ago I set up a client's TH58PZ800 (58" 1080p) with a PC signal from quite a low spec HTPC system. It was tested with VGA and HDMI for comparison purposes. Viewing distances ranged from under 3ft to over 20ft. I did work in Windows Explorer, Control Panel, Device Manager, browsers - Firefox, IE and Chrome, as well as using XBMC. I also used a variety of test patterns generated from the PC including Philips, Nokia, NEC, Extron and DisplayMate. All showed clear readable text with no need for any additional sharpening.

If you're finding that you have to increase sharpening with a PC image (VGA or HDMI) then there's either something wrong with the way you have things set up or your eye sight.

In order to pursue a valid claim you'll have to satisfy certain requirements; one will be to prove you know what you're doing with setting up the TV with the PC. I don't believe you do.

My view based on what you've written so far is that you've been setting things up wrong for as long as you've had the TV. It's only now that your errors are coming to light. But instead of seeking advice and checking your understanding, all you've done is looked for someone else to blame.

I don't doubt that you believe there's some issue with the sharpening since the last firmware update. It's funny though that no one else has mentioned any problems with G30s over on AVForums.

*** my setup is fine/has been fine for 4 years since i set it up/a panasonic update changed that/you cannot see how bad it is because its not sitting in front of you ***

The more posts I read from hash70 the more I'm convinced that we aren't being told the whole story. Angling for a new TV much?

Panasonics often display the new channels update. This would coincide with the Freeview retunes for 4G rollout and the extra HD channel allocations.

The channel update notifications are not a Panasonic update, just a notification that the Freeview channels need rescanning. Firmware updates are downloaded from the internet, usually notified when you access the SmartTV functions.

Yeah, I'm thinking OP is the "noobend" in this.

Panasonic hardly ever update their tv firmware.

the fact the G30 panels are ancient now and they disbanded their plasma division months ago, I would say that OP doesn't have a clue what they are on about.

I've had three updates for the G30. One when it came out of the box, one about 6 months in the last one one said something cryptic about "soft peaks" and that was well over a year ago

Last set I owned that got an OTA update from the engineering channel was an older Panasonic LCD.

tbh my LG plasma came up with a firmware update that it downloaded over what I can only assume was the tv aerial as its not a smart TV.

LG are much more fequent with updates, Panasonic do have them, but normally Via internet, and generally only upto a year or 2 on, G30 is what 3 years old now !!

Best thing to do is to see what the Firmware version the telly is running.

I think hash70 just wanted someone to agree with him that he should take this to court. A total overreaction IMO.

I think most of us would have checked a bit further and used the opportunity here to trouble-shoot thoroughly before wanting to run off to court. He seemed adamant though. I guess we might see what he's going to do or has done after he returns from suspension.
