Hi there, I have been searching for info on pairing a asus stx sound card and Edifier R1600T Studio Plus 2.0 speakers. I'm wondering if this is easy to connect up and if so how is it done and is it worth it ?

I'm a sound noob, but I do spend all my day either editing video or listening to planet rock/vast mp3 collection while I edit photos, occasionally I will play kerbal space program or planetary annihilation.

My current setup is an ancient sound blaster x-fi hd titanium (sb 880 i think, drivers dont even work properly in windows 8.1 these days, i have to change modes to make the card kick in) and 5.1 speakers made of the sats of a creative s750 on a ancient videologic 10 year old 5.1 pc speaker amp (original creative blew up), any info on what to expect going ahead with this given most of my day is video editing (and thus listening to audio with that) or listening to tunes all day while i work?

As you can see i have let my audio lose out over time and as I spend most of my time editing or listening to music, I thought the stx and speakers would be right up my street? HALP :D  :)

Sure its a X-Fi HD Titanium? thats not _that_ old a soundcard as things go - my x-fi is still going strong on Windows 7 but no idea on the windows 8 front but I thought the latest beta drivers for it were fairly good.

Speakers wise its pretty easy the 1600s come with a normal 3.5mm stereo jack.

I use the Asus Xonar Essence STX and Edifier 1600T and they do sound really good together. However, the main reason I got the STX is for my headphones (Beyerdynamic DT990) as the STX has an excellent DAC and headphone amp. The Edifiers connect via a simple 3.5mm stereo plug while the headphones use a full size 6.3mm stereo plug and I just switch between the two via the control panel software.
If you're not going to use headphones then you really don't need such an expensive sound card, the Creative Soundblaster Z (oem) is a real bargain around £50 and the Asus Xonar DG (PCI) or DGX (PCIe) are only £20ish.
If you do get the edifiers make sure you can place them at least 5" away from the walls as they are rear ported and placing them closer will do nasty things to the bass. I also have mine sitting on large pads of blu-tak to isolate them from the desk and although I think it makes them sound better it might just be a touch of the placebos :D

They are amazing value if you can find the sweet spot though, worth a lot more than the £50 I paid for them.

SB0880 is the PCIe Titanium, not the Titanium HD.

I wouldn't buy a Xonar Essence for £70 speakers, OP. If you going to use fairly high end headphones as well, then it makes more sense, but for just £70 speakers, that's a lot of money to pay out when the gains will be no better than a card half the price.

As rids57 has already mentioned, either a DGX or a Soundblaster Z OEM, would be ideal.

Thanks for the input guys, hmmm ok fair enough, I may as well get 5.1 speakers then and a soundblaster Z.

Is there an amazing 5.1 speaker set thats a bargain like the Edifers?

OR I still have all my speakers from my creative S750's - I have read these are great satellites , is there a sub I can buy to use with these or am I better off just buying a new 5.1 set?

do you really need 5.1 sound for listening to music? I'd have thought a good stereo pair or 2.1 would have been more suited.

Thats what I cannot decide, I DO play games with my botch job of a sound system now, and love the surround sound.

I have been told my s750 sats are really really good.

Thinking now I need a sub/amp to replace the old sub/amp of the s750, what you recommend people?

The amplifier for all the satellite speakers is housed inside the subwoofer, which outside of the PC speaker market, is rare. You can't just go and buy another to replace it, because they are never sold by themselves. You could buy a AV receiver, but there is no way to connect the current subwoofer to that (assuming it is still working). You'd need to buy a subwoofer as well. Unless you are looking at some used bargains, new, you'd be paying £200 maybe. You can buy a whole Yamaha AV receiver + 5.1 speaker package for that.

Indeed they are rare, but is it technically possible to just get a 5.1 receiver and also a separate sub and it will work? If so which models?

I AM using a videologic sub and those sats now (old video logic 5.1 system), its just the video logic sub/amp is a let down its from a 10 year old £80 speaker set.

Soundblaster Z is on its way and will be here tomorrow.

It just seems a shame waste these s750 sats :/

if cannot be done, what speakrs?

Rel q50 for the sub and a second hand onkyo 605 amp. If your motherboard does 5.1 then you wouldn't have needed a sound card and used optical out on mobo

You can buy a AV receiver and a subwoofer; as I said previously, you're probably looking at £200, new. Richer Sounds have a Sony receiver for about £100, and a Tannoy SFX subwoofer for £100.

No point in using optical, I want to use the sound processing abilities of add in sound cards?
