My Mercedes SLK (2011 1.8 turbo) is due to go back at the end of its lease in a few months. I however have a number of trips planned this year where I will be doing to England both alone and with the family, with our intention to travel around the UK a bit more.

Ive decided I want an estate, about 6 grand (although flexible, saving for a house so prefer to spend less if possible).

Any ideas? Help? Suggestions? I have no idea what to look for in such a vehicle, all my previous cars have been sporty affairs.

Accord Estate is massive, and if you get exec model it will have plenty toys!

My personal option would be a Skoda Superb diesel if I was after an estate. It has more space than the Accord 2.2 diesel. Has the same power. Smaller engine so drinks less. But there's not that many within the 6k and under bracket unless they're absolute nails at this point. So it would be the Accord for a 6k second choice. The only other option would be the Mondeo Estate. More powerful than the Accord, but not nearly as much space and less frugal (in 2.2 diesel form, not sure if you're fussed on engines and mpgs and that). And absolutely tons of them to choose from. I'm pretty sure the Accord is better spec'd than the Ford Ghia X or later Titanium X as rossk26 says, they've a lot of toys as standard compared to the optional extras of the Ford and Skoda.

Ive never bought anything with miles as high as 100k before - whats the pitfalls to look out for when buying high mileage?

Tbh I haven't either, but I don't think it is so much of an issue these days. I expect there are lower mileage ones around, that one was just the first one I found as an example. The Mondeo Estate is supposed to be a great car however.

Accords are generally reliable, much more so than VAG 2.0 diesels anyway. With most modern cars, its the diesel variant that will be least reliable. My experience with both VAG and Honda Diesels is that, they both cost about the same when they break, but the honda breaks less. With the honda you need to avoid the 04/05 models, these have a well documented problem with the oil pump and chain, other than that, there aint a right lot to go wrong.

Getting a car with with FSH is a must, and condition is more important than mileage.

Mondeo Estate.

Massive, cheap and there are loads around so sourcing a good one with good spec shouldn't be a problem.

Get a 2.5T if you want performance
