Jam salad still makes me laugh.
I don't see hotlinking an image as a good idea, even it it is endorsed by the host site.
Ultimately, you are not in control of what the image displayed will be. It could contain unwelcome ads as mentioned or the linked image could get changed to one not too family or forum friendly.
It is unlikely that Getty would swap out the image to something non family/forum friendly. The whole idea is to get their image on your site with some form of advertising in the long run. If they swapped out images, then it is likely people will not use their services.
I don't like the idea, since the originator of the photo will not get a share of the revenue.
I think the idea will bite Getty on the backside, since there will probably be a backlash against them from the contributors.

That argument can be used with any hosting provider though.
In fairness any of us who hotlink from our own servers can do this.
Every six months I change all the pictures I've hotlinked in threads to hardcore pornography screencaps. Go back a few pages in GD and you'll find some horrifically depraved stuff that mods don't have the time to police.
The secret porn forum is, in actual fact, GD.
If the image is on getty then you will have no rights to download the image and host it yourself.

On the subject of uploading images and extensions.... Is there a an extension or an easier way to upload to my ntlworld/virgin webspace? for instance, an extension that allows you to modify the upload site details? I forver getting annoyed that I have to downlaod a pic. and open filezilla and upload that way..
