Got my boy (7 yrs old) a reasonable (for a kids bike) MTB - can't wait to get him offroad and muddy :-)

Looking for some advice? Mountain bike wheel size?

26er's have always looked daft at my frame size, the wheels look too small and out of proportion. (I'm 6'3)

29er's look a little clumsy to me, and have long top tubes and tight head angles to accommodate the bigger wheels.

27.5" 650c doesn't look as daft as it seems, however if you take a medium or smaller frame I doubt you would see much advantage over a 26er.

I think if I was buying now I would go 650c with a dropper post..

Thoughts please?

Picture of the fat bloke above is excellent.

650B*

And it entirely depends what kind of bike you're after and where you want to ride?
As for 26" vs 27,5" (650b), there isn't a night and day difference as the marketeers would have you believe.

I would however go for a 650B bike, purely because I think that all the latest best bikes are / will come out in that wheel size.

ps: Top tubes have nothing to do with wheelsize.
pps: Long top tubes and reach are the way forward
ppps: 29ers in fact for the most part have short ones, as they cater more for the XC crowd, who for some reason like stems as long as a pornstar schlong

I currently ride a 26er On One Inbred, I'm on the edge of the Peak District.

I'm a roadie mainly - my technical skills aren't great I would describe myself as XC certainly not freeride or DH.

There are some great trails around here.

I've done it, I've screwed off The cycle scheme and bought the Saracen Mantra Pro 2014 I wanted outright.

Anyone have any recommendations for road tires or do you think the tires on it will have enough roll for the road?

Anyone have any recommedations for a Repair kit, like tyre levers and pumps and what not?

Also decent lights and Decent Bike Lock will be good too.

Many Thanks

Pictures for when it arrives, the pictures make it look really good though. :D

P.S. When I start Trailing, any tips on overcoming daunting looking drops during the trial? Done some on my old bike and always felt like a pussy when my mates wen't down them and I was always too scared too. :(

I'm 6'3" my arse is about 5ft in the air on an XC bike.

Dropper post look like the answer to me, just get your weight back over the back wheel.

Whats a dropper post? I just had a quick google, suspension seat post?

Dropper seatposts are brilliant especially for taller riders.
They drop 4 or 5 inches via a remote on the handlebar or under the saddle.

This allows you to get your backside off the back of the bike for the technical sections and raise it back up for the XC bits.

The other solution is to run your saddle lower all the time, this works to a point but I struggle pedalling on the fast bits with the seat lower than optimum.

Problem is with droppers - they cost a fortune and it's another complicated, expensive part to service and maintain.

Dropper posts work well for hairy handed Hobbits too! In the 2+ years I have had my Reverb I have only had to bleed it twice. It's a doddle to do.

Ive decided to go back to 3x10 on my XC bike and use the 1x10 kit on my new stumpy build.

Im running a 10spd KMC ultra light which is pretty much new, Now im back to 3x10 obviously the chains too short. Rather than me buying a new one am i ok in using 2 split links?

I got both my bikes stolen (bmx and mtb) but I really want to get back in the game. Especially now I live in the lake district. I'll definitely be getting a hardtail but I have no idea what yet.

I bought my missus a trek ticket then stuck on a big sofa like gel seat on it. We've rode sherwood blue and green a fair few times but she has no interest :-( . Shes got my canyon nerve now so im going to stick the gel seat on that and probably take the 750 havoc bars off for shorter ones.
