I currently have an LG 50PK350 50" plasma TV, hooked up to a Denon 7.1 amp, 360, xbox one, WDTV Live and Sky HD.

I tend to mostly watch TV and Game a little but have been streaming more lately from either the WDTV or YT... this tends to leave image burn on screen and although the LG has a great screen wash feature, im fed up having to run it often, so am looking to go LED..

Budget £1100 Max

So far the TV's im interested in:

Sony KDL50W685ABU £799 (was able to see it running instore, a 1080p mkv from usb, nice blacks, colour and sharpness)

Sony KDL50W829BBU £899

Panasonic TX-L55ET60B £999 (or 61B?) (I read that Lag is bad, would this be bad for Xbox gaming?)

LG 55LA620V £898 (few reviews but seams good for the price)

LG 50LA660V £899 (again, few reviews but seams good for the price)

Samsung UE55F6500 £1095 (favourable reviews, but having seen a lower model play the same mkv that was run on the Sony above, its picture was nowhere near as sharp or clear, may have been the settngs though and will need to see in action.

I'll be going to a local store after work to try and see more of these in action running the same mkv if possible to compare.

Does anyone have any knowledge of any of these that can offer any advice?
I'll be honest and say I would realy prefer the bigger 55" screen, but if picture quality is better on a 50" then so be it.

You want Sony LCD (LED backlit) from either the 2013 range or if you want better PQ 2014 range and spend a bit more.

If you don't know what is what then go to avforums and do some research.

Sony are the leading brand IMO in the LCD market, especially for gaming.

The worry I have with sony, having done a little reading on avforums etc, is that the refresh rate is not as advertised on some sites... most state 200hz, but it appears Sony released firmware that reduced this to 100hz and there is even a petition online to have the feature restored (so I've read).
Though to be fair, the Sony I tested in store looked great and played Enders Game opening sequence (which is fast paced), really well, so not sure it is any issue. But can't compare a video to gaming...

I have a Sony KDL50W656 and have been very, very happy with it. The picture is fantastic with minimal settings fiddling and I, personally (imho, ymmv, etc) can't feel any input lag from my consoles.

Can't tell you what the speakers are like, it's hooked up to my AV.

Thanks Woden, sound wont be an issue, have a nice new Denon 7.1 amp which give great sound, so it's only picture and responce im worried about.

Refresh rates from manufacturers are all BS.

iirc my tv supposedly has a refresh rate of 2000 hz or something ridiculous, i think it realistically has 120 hz.

forget refresh rates and get yourself a new sony panel 2013 or newer (don't buy an old panel). if it's 3d that means it should have a decent refresh rate.

if not then it could be slightly lower but nothing you would call poor.

at your budget i wouldn't worry about something as trivial as refresh rates.

cheers Psycho, I'll see what the shop has on display then and test with my mkv and pick the best all rounder.

any Sony you get for £1K should be brilliant (so long as you don't get ripped off).

John Lewis is my recommended retailer although I know some people like Richer Sounds and Official Outlets too.

I can vouch for the Sony W9 series LEDs. I went through a bunch of panels before settling on one of these. The 46" is in your budget, but it's worth stretching a bit for the 55" :)

How about the KDL55W805 then £1099, so just in budget?

It's John Lewis that I will be visiting as the only other TV outlout near me is the purple place :(

I know the LG's are not best Plasma but you will not be happy with a LCD after a decent plasma.

Gaming on a TV (PC) is not ideal, far better on a monitor.

All the fancy 100-600HZ setting make motion weird at times and the reviews will tell you to diablo them.

That was a the case a little while back, but higher end LEDs have come along very nicely in recent years. Before settling on my current Sony LED I was outputting games to both it and a current Panny to do a vs b comparisons. Gaming on the Sony was considerably better, both in terms of input lag and how it handled motion (particularly with 30fps content), and with less video nasties thrown in. The Panny went back and the Sony is still here.

IMO they are all poor.

LCD with LED backlighting nothing more.

I really wish there was a TV to give CRT quality like the mothballed SED or FED.

I would jump on a Kuro or certain Panny Plasmas if one came up near me.

I will never own another LCD TV and hope OLED improves in next 2-3 years.

I do not do consoles and PC uses a FW900 monitor, if it dies I will need see that Asus Swift when it appears as no other choice.

I am actually looking at projectors but a little impractical to run the cables to it from devices.

Trust me - I'm in your camp. I have an FW900 and a giant 32" HD CRT that still get use. My current Sony LED is the closest I've gotten to that level of performance in any screen larger than 32" in games. I've been through a shed load of plasmas (was going through a Panny a year before giving up due to phosphor lag and dithering issues that never seem to get resolved) too. A few years ago we would be in full agreement, but right now if you want decent lag free gaming, a Sony LED is as good as it gets.

But yeah, bring on oled :)

Is the TV a HDReady Sammy Slimfit?

I knew Plasma was not the best for games, even though motion is less a problem on them that LCD.

It's a JVC behemoth of a *******! Heavier than the Sun. I had the Sammy you're talking about though for about 3 hours. 3 hours was the time it took the delivery guys to come back after dropping it off due to the awful picture :) It's a shame HD CRTs never really took off in this country - there were some lovely sets in the US/Japan.

Plasma has huge IR issues so it just isn't a choice for some (I own 2 plasmas). If you watch sky sports all day over the weekends I can see the logo for the rest of the week and sometimes even several weeks later depending on how long it was on for.

I'm therefore always fearful when I watch a channel with a logo for too long.

Plasma does have it's downsides.

Ok, I spent a lot more and got the Sony W90, fantastic picture, but I have one issue...
All my devices such as Sky HD, are connected to a Denon AVR X2000 via HDMI, then the output of the Denon is connected to the Sony, same as I had when I had the LG...
Set the Sony Speakers to Audio System and turned on Sky and boom, sound, however, when I browse to my Nas and play a movie, or play a YT video, I still get the sound from Sky???
To hear the audio from the nas film or YT, I have to switch back to the TV speakers?

I did the same thing today but with a panny gt60 - if you think about it your amp is playing the sound from devices input into it and pic to telly but the app on the telly isnt connected to the amp for sound...

I had to put an optical cable from telly to amp and then i get the sound from NAS app and Netflix via tv etc - i have to turn the Tivo off but the amp auto detects the sound so seems to switch ok.
