I have been saving my money for several years now and find myself in the position to buy a new car.

Ideally the car will be brand new, fully aware of depreciation etc.

Which car would you buy if you had 20k to spend?

I'm fully open to all types of cars and manufacturers (Not a badge snob).

Fiesta ST-2 for 15k through drive the deal, slap mountune upgrade on it and pocket the rest. :D

Don't think you could have more fun for less money (when buying new) and very cheap to run as well.

Seriously considering doing this next year once we have moved and settled into our new home.

Decent shout from Jono, although I'm sure others will disagree. You may even be able to get the Mountune kit for free as well.

Do you want a quick car or just a 'new car'

What other requirements do you have?
Seats? Comfort? Performance? Warranty?

If I had £20k, I would be doing everything I could to buy a GT86
dat long Toyota warranty.

dude you've got to narrow it down a little bit or tell us at least how you'll be using it or you'll just have a list of all cars sitting around the 20k mark.

need more than 2 seats?

Ideally:
Larger than a super mini.
4 doors.
5 seats.
Mainly for urban driving.

Body type: Hatchback, Coupe, Saloon, Convertible or 4x4 (doesn't have to be four wheel drive).

Saving cash for several years only to lose a few k in depreciation just driving it out of the showroom... why not buy a 6 month old car and save money!?

Or if you dont want to save money, buy a better 6 month old car for the original budget..

Why not buy a 6 year old car and save even more money?

I'm fully aware of depreciation.

Or why not buy a car you actually want rather than spending a significant amount of money for the sake of it?

Because there are massive and tangible differences between a 6 month old car and a 6 year old car.

A 6 year old car is likely to need expensive repair work at any moment, is more likely to be in cosmetically and mechanically poorer condition, etc etc.

A 6 month old is like new, only cheaper. You've still got 2.5 years of comprehensive manufacturers warranty, many of them have only a few thousand miles on the clock, etc.

If you are fixed to a budget it would be very daft not to see what opening up to nearly-new could do for you. You might still decide it's possible to buy what you want new, in which case great, but its more likely you'll find better or higher specification cars that are fundamentally the same in budget if you are happy with a 3k mile/6 month old one.

Unless you buy something small most new cars for under £20k are going to be fairly basic models.

For new I'd have a Fiesta ST2 or a GT86, as mentioned above.

For used - if running costs aren't a concern - I'd have a Focus RS or an E9x M3 (odd pair, I know).

Yes I'm sure somebody who isn't bothered about performance and wants a car for town would be right at home in a 6 year old M3.

I'm incredibly jealous. The most I've ever spent on a car is £950 and I can't imagine ever being in a position to spend more than £2500 :(

I think if I had your budget I'd want a nearly new Mini Countryman or Subaru BRZ.
But if it had to be brand new then I'd probably go for a Citroën DS5.
