Law passed in UK to allow women to do background checks on partners

Err no. The police will only release information if they believe there is a credible risk. The public protection units are very experienced to know what is a real threat and what is spurious.

err yes, because no officer in thier right mind is going to risk ever not passing on a report is he?

think about it he doesn't pass it o nas it's a blatantly spurious report, the guy then goes on to kill or hit the woman, that officer is going to be dragged through the press till he finds himself on the dole, in a cell or hanging from his rafters.

oh and you know this doesn't just include the people in the relationship right?

anyone can request the information as long as they know the potential "victim" and are "placed to help them" this includes "neighbors and friends"

When a request gets submitted for a disclosure it does not mean the police reveal every job they've been to that is DV related. It goes to a specialist department who look at the history and decide if there is a credible risk posed to a new partner and may disclose some information on previous incidents. This does not give anyone carte blanche access to Police information.

Stop scare mongering. You sound like the DM here.

I've been with my partner for 22 years but I'm going to tell her I'm doing a background check just to see the look on her face :)

With CRB checks, you are checked against the police national computer for convictions. Will it be the same for dating checks, or will it be just one's word against the other? I can see this system being abused, whatever the gender.

that was from the police leaflet i was given....

ben on the other side of this before bunsey, ex had a small psychotic episode, threw stuff around screamed like she was being violent murders hit me a few times (neightbours had called police at this point) and tried to hurt herself.

when they turned up i got dragged of to the other room and quite prejudiced inquired about what had happened including if i had hi her etc, despite me being the one bleeding, fortunately shed come around enough by the shock of a bunch of police turning up to explain hat had happened or i think i'd have been going off with the coppers that night.

after that things were mostly good they gave us some mental health numbers and were preparing to leave until lthe female officer arrived, to talk to her and whispered if she as in danger they could remove me and not to be scared :/

If they were so effective then this law wouldn't be necessary as the psycho who killed the Clare girl wouldn't have been dandering around getting a new woman...

I take your point on x or y, but given how poor communication is within government bodies as a whole, and how it has been demonstrated that information previously hasn't been passed between forces, I can see future errors in this system.

What is interesting is that you have to ask. I would have thought many simply wouldn't ask anyway, but who knows.

An unbelievably stupid law. IIRC 40% of domestic violence is women-on-men... or nearly half. Once again, men are second class citizens.

A tiny drop in the domestic violence ocean. It offers all the limited protection of a CRB check without the crucially important universal application. This is optional and for that reason it will be broadly ineffective.

I have worked for the CRB and yes every criminal offence is recorded. :(

If it is on the PNC disk you not getting a date! :p

Another law born out of moral panic whipped up by the press, it seems uneeded as brutal as DV is, wide spread access to information that isn't even convictions is going to create a lot of untrue info getting out
